Know The Glow

Know The Glow We help parents see their child’s vision in a new light. Because no child should go blind from a preventable eye disease.

Ben's Story, as told by Know the Glow Founder Megan Webber--

“When I was looking back at family photos, I noticed my son Benjamin had a recurring golden flash in his left eye- but I didn’t think too much about it. My sister called to tell me about a TV show she’d seen that warned about the dangers of ‘cat’s eye reflection.’ She had noticed a similar glow in Benjamin’s left eye from photos she’d t

aken during a family trip. Her concern motivated me to call my pediatrician straight away. Ultimately, Benjamin was diagnosed with Coat’s Disease. We were stunned…

Benjamin was legally blind in his left eye, but hadn’t exhibited any of the typical signs of blindness, like bumping into walls or rubbing his eyes. What I didn’t know then was that this gold flash, invisible to the naked eye, could indicate at least 20 different eye diseases or conditions- some of them are even life threatening. Once our family overcame the immediate crisis and we settled back into daily life, I couldn’t stop thinking about The Glow. As I learned more, I felt an obligation to help parents see their child’s vision in a new light. Because, like Benjamin, no child should go blind from a preventable eye disease.”

If you notice a white glow or unusual reflection in a child's eye in a photo, trust what you see. Get it checked.

When Bohdan’s parents noticed his eyes becoming crossed—and a white reflection appearing in certain light—they never imagined it could be something serious. But that moment led to a diagnosis of retinoblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood eye cancer.

As their family navigates treatment and unimaginable challenges, their story is a powerful reminder: early signs matter.

It's World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week!

Retinoblastoma may be rare, but recognizing the signs early can make a life-changing difference. One of the earliest clues can appear in something as simple as a photo—a white reflection in the eye known as The Glow.

This week, take a moment to look at some photos of your children, start a conversation, and share this knowledge with others. Awareness doesn’t just inform, it can help protect a child’s sight and life.

Together, we can turn awareness into action.

Future healthcare professionals are powerful changemakers, and it starts with awareness.

The KnowTheGlow Student Chapter at SACON recently hosted an Eye Health Awareness Session for 100 physiotherapy students in Hadapsar, Pune, equipping them with the knowledge to recognize leukocoria, the white glow that can signal serious eye conditions like retinoblastoma.

By learning the early warning signs and the importance of timely referrals, these students are now better prepared to help protect children’s vision in their communities.

This is how change grows: through education, collaboration, and action.

We’re grateful to the SACON Chapter for leading with purpose and helping expand the global movement to end preventable childhood blindness.
