This Lao, Khmer, and Thai New Year, Southeast Asian American families across the country will light candles, make offerings, and gather together. But for some families, there is an empty seat because unjust detention and deportation have taken a loved one. Deportations of Cambodians rose 184% from 2024–2025 and deportations of communities from Laos went from zero in 2024 to 300+ in 2025. We must demand real protection for our communities: Urge your Representative to cosponsor the Southeast Asian Deportation Relief Act (SEADRA) today. Take action here: https://linktr.ee/searac

The City of Olympia is planning to relocate the Yashiro Japanese Garden to a new public location. The current site at 1010 Plum Street SE will close June 1, 2026.

Key features will be preserved for a future garden. The City’s priority is to carry forward the garden’s legacy as a symbol of friendship between Olympia and Kato (formerly Yashiro), Japan. A new location has not yet been selected.

Staff will begin soliciting a landscape designer to guide a community-driven site selection and design process. There will be opportunities to provide feedback and guidance. If you would like to be contacted as engagement gets underway, please contact the Director of Parks Planning and Maintenance at [email protected] or call 360.570.5855.
