Southern California chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects - SoCalNOMA Chase, D. Dodd, Kenneth B. Groggs, Nelson Harris, Jeh Johnson, E.H.

Twelve African-American architects from different parts of the country met, some for the first time, during the AIA National Convention in Detroit in 1971. What these professionals recognized was the desperate need for an organization dedicated to the development and advancement of minority architects. Present at the creation were William Brown, Leroy Campbell, Wendell Campbell, John S. McDowell, Robert J. Nash, Harold Williams, and Robert Wilson. These African American architects wanted minority design professionals to work together to fight discriminatory policies that limit or bar minority architects from participating in design and constructions programs. That was the beginning of the National Organization of Minority Architects, an increasing influential voice, promoting the quality and excellence of minority design professionals. There are NOMA Chapters in all parts of the country, increasing recognition on colleges and university campuses and providing greater access to government policy makers.

Design Professionals GIVE BACK TO THE NEXT GENERATION - SoCal NOMA is seeking architects, interior designers, planners, engineers, and other design professionals to volunteer for our annual Project Pipeline Architecture Summer Camp.

Project Pipeline was created to increase diversity within architecture and the built environment by introducing young people to design careers and connecting them with professionals who look like them and understand their experiences.

Whether you can mentor students in the classroom, support workshops, lead discussions, or chaperone field trips, your knowledge and experience can have a lasting impact.

Volunteer opportunities include: Camp Mentors, Workshop Support, Field Trip Chaperones, Social Media Mentors, Student Project Reviews

Middle School Camp: Saturdays: July 11, 18, 25 & August 1

High School Camp: July 21–25

Help us equip, empower, and educate the next generation of diverse design leaders.

This weekend, we had the incredible pleasure of witnessing — the graduation of our former campers Kaleb Brown, and Stephen Curtis from Howard University.

For the past decade, every program we created, every opportunity we worked to build, and every lesson poured into the next generation was inspired by them. To watch them take all of that time, energy, mentorship, and support and transform it into their own architectural journey has been one of the greatest rewards imaginable.

On Saturday, February 21st we participated in the City of Pasadena’s 44th Annual Black History Festival sharing who we are, our youth architecture camp opportunities and our Altadena Rebuild Coalition.
