It has been said, “There’s no education, like traveling the world.” We agree, and have seen the positive effects of immersing one’s self into other cultures and learning their histories.

On dropouts, specifically, Carol Moseley-Braun said doors to education need to be reopened for those who've walked away in the past, particularly for African Americans.

Responding to a question about the documentary "Waiting for Superman," she said the current education system, with its charter and special enrollment schools, has left neighborhood schools behind.

Interesting article...it's worth reading!

Education is an ECONOMIC issue.
It not only affects the type of job a person gets, it also directly impacts how much he/she makes now and over their lifetime.
An achievement gap between black and white students has long been documented. However, according to a new report by the Council of the Great City Schools (an advocacy group for urban public schools), only 12 percent of black fourth-grade boys are proficient in reading,
compared with 38 percent of white boys, and only 12 percent of black
eighth-grade boys are proficient in math, compared with 44 percent of
white boys.

A new report focusing on black males suggests that the picture of the achievement gap separating black from white students is even bleaker than generally known.

Dropping out of high school has a financial impact on students that is
extreme and forever, according to experts. A high school dropout will
earn about $260,000 less during their lifetime than a high school
graduate, according to a study by Columbia University's Teacher's
College.

The following is a quote by Al Reynolds, the Tea Party candidate in Illinois’ 52nd District:

"I've been in the city and the dichotomy of the women and the men in
the minorities, there is a difference in the fact that most minority
women, either the single parent or coming from a poor neighborhood, are
motivated more so than the minority men," Reynolds said, when asked what
he would do to increase diversity at state colleges.

"And it's a pretty good reason. Most of the women who are single
parents have to find work to support their family. The minority men find
it more lucrative to be able to do drugs or other avenues rather than
do education. It's easier."

Wow, is all I can say. Even so called "educated folks" need to be truly educated. Environment and a lack of options and opportunities are amongst factors affecting disadvantaged communities.

One out of three U.S. students does not graduate from high school. Among students of color, the dropout rate is almost 50 percent. Only 44% of Black males and 52% of Latino males graduate from high school."
