En Garde Arts is the innovative non-profit theatre production company headed by Anne Hamburger and driven by diverse and interdisciplinary artists. Our productions harness place, occasion, story, and the producing process itself to create theatre for social change. We produce immersive theatrical experiences to reveal the complex world around us.

40 years of En Garde Arts means 40 years of stories you simply had to be in the room to believe.
 Like this one from Jefferson Mays, the star of En Garde’s iconic production Orestes on a dilapidated pier on the banks of the Hudson River.  
On October 13, we’re bringing four decades of artists, collaborators, friends, troublemakers, and New York theater history together for a night 40 years in the making. 
Every table for our 40th Anniversary Gala has officially been spoken for (!), but we’ve held a limited number of individual tickets because we want you in the room with us. 
Artist tickets: $150
Individual tickets: $250 
Come for the world premiere of PRELUDE. Stay for dinner, celebration, and the kind of legendary En Garde stories you can only hear when you’re actually there.

40 years of En Garde Arts, told by the artists who made it.

First up: the incomparable Penny Arcade Penny Arcade

Annie Hamburger first worked with Penny at the Chelsea Hotel in “At the Chelsea” an En Garde production that took over three hotel rooms, featured a live goat, and was temporarily shut down by the FDNY. (Naturally, we got it back up.)

Soon after, En Garde gave Penny her first-ever commission. What followed was a singular career that helped shape the landscape of downtown performance.

As we celebrate 40 years, we’re looking back with the artists who were there and who made En Garde what it is today.

On June 14, Fandango for Butterflies (and Coyotes) returns for one night only, not just as a concert, but as an invitation to show up for the immigrant and working-class communities that make New York what it is. Presented by En Garde Arts and Make The Road New York.
