We're working to bring access to sustainable clean water, sanitation and agriculture to the rural populations in Mozambique with an emphasis on educating and empowering the local people. We are humanitarian organization with a mission to provide access to clean and safe drinking water to the entire rural population of Mozambique, Africa. We are permanently based in Mozambique with offices and lega
l establishment as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in Los Angeles, California. Our projects take place in the schools, starting with the most vulnerable communities in the rural areas. We not only put in a water well providing clean water, we form community oversight committees and train with them over a month and witness the emergence of new, natural leaders. They are trained in complete maintenance & operations of the well and sustainability models to ensure long-term development. Water Underground partners with the committee to build 27,000 sq ft gardens to grow vegetables for food security/nutrition and income generation. We also build full sanitation centers complete with a feminine hygiene room (because currently in Mozambique girls do not go to school when they are menstruating due to shame and no bathroom facilities). We have an in-depth health program focused on the prevention and treatment of water borne diseases through good hygiene and sanitation practices. Currently women in Mozambique (from as young as 5 years old) spend up to 8 hours/day walking through hilly, sandy terrain to fetch dirty water from local rivers and old traditional wells which are riddled with disease and filth, just to provide water for their families. Now that they have clean, accessible drinking water, they have their time back, for the first time in their entire life. Our program is engrained in empowering women. Girls finally have the confidence and ability to go to school, participate in their local economy through learning new skills/trades, and are now able to say they feel beautiful because they feel a sense of pride in having clean water for good hygiene and general well being. From water EVERYTHING grows.
