At the 1984 Summer Olympic Games, Mexico’s Raúl González walked his way to gold in the 50 km race walk, breaking the Olympic record in the event and winning by nearly six minutes in an unforgettable display of excellence and perseverance.

As LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games calls for 60,000 volunteers to help write Los Angeles’ next Olympic and Paralympic chapter, we look back at volunteer memories from the 1984 Summer Olympics.

Keiko Yajima signed up to volunteer in 1984 and quickly became embedded in the Olympic Village, assisting visitors from all over the world as they competed and experienced Los Angeles, a city where the vibes were at an all-time (Olympic) high.

Volunteering at the Olympic and Paralympic Games is an experience like none other. Before Russell Westbrook was an MVP and Olympic Gold Medalist, he was hooping in youth basketball programs funded by the legacy of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games. Access to sports and play isn’t about creating the next pro athlete, though it's an incredible achievement when that happens. It’s about giving kids a place to belong, build confidence, take chances, and discover a love for the game. And sometimes, that journey takes them all the way to the league and beyond.

42 years ago today, the 1984 Summer Olympics came to a close with LAOOC President Peter Ueberroth addressing the Coliseum:

“If we have somehow brought this world a little bit closer, then we have indeed successfully staged an Olympic Games, and in a small way, perhaps we have secured a better future for all the children of the world.”

Those words have served as a guiding light, inspiring us to carry forward the legacy of the 1984 Games and ensure its impact continues to benefit youth and communities across Southern California.
