Council for Watershed Health

Council for Watershed Health Council for Watershed Health works to advance healthy watersheds for healthy communities in SoCal through science-based research and community engagement.

CWH was founded in 1996 by Dorothy Green to preserve, restore and enhance the Los Angeles and San Gabriel River Watersheds. For twenty years, CWH has worked to promote more efficient use of stormwater resources by providing leadership, guidance, and technical assistance to agencies and organizations to affect sound watershed planning and management. We have a proven track record of strengthening c

oordination of regional watershed planning, measuring and tracking progress towards achieving healthier urban environments and fostering a regional landscape ethic that reduces water use through the planting of native and regionally appropriate vegetation. Today, our programs reflect the complexity of water resiliency in a changing climate and continue to address diverse themes such as, urban stormwater capture and recharge, community capacity building in multi-benefit green infrastructure projects, watershed monitoring and the implementation of sustainable
landscapes.

A glimpse of ReDesigningLA Together: Lessons from a Decade of Partnerships last week!

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the day so special.

This event was a unique opportunity to explore the successful models and many lessons learned from CWH’s ReDesignLA program. Each panel featured speakers representing the unique opportunities that community-led multibenefit green infrastructure projects present in Los Angeles County. Attendees learned the importance of reciprocal relationships with CBOs and Tribes to achieve authentic and culturally sensitive outreach, education, and engagement.

Through facilitated group activities, attendees also had the opportunity to share their own knowledge throughout the day and embody the collective spirit of our ReDesignLA Program.

Special thanks to SJ for designing our symposium illustrations and to Rosten Woo for facilitating the activities throughout the day.

Together, we’re promoting large-scale schoolyard greening and stormwater management throughout LA County, focusing on the most park-poor historically impacted communities.

We announced our partnership at the Green CA Schools and Higher Education Summit in Pasadena last November, leading a session titled Managing Stormwater on School Campuses: From Potential to Permits. The session covered what stormwater runoff is, the impact of stormwater pollution on our waterways, and exploring data from a TreePeople study on the potential of LAUSD schools to contribute to stormwater management.

The key takeaways on why this matters:

💧In LA County, the average one-inch rainstorm results in 10 billion gallons (30,700 acre-feet) of runoff moving through the storm drain system

🏫 Looking at all schools in LA County, there is a total of 19.5 billion gallons per year (60,000 acre-feet/yr) of stormwater management potential. This volume would address almost 75% of LA County’s groundwater recharge goal for context.

💦 Strategically selecting the sites with the greatest potential, 10% of these schools (78 LAUSD campuses) could capture 9.8 billion gallons per year (30,000 acre-feet/year).

🌳 While schools are not currently regulated by a stormwater permit (i.e. where they are required to legally manage the stormwater that runs off their sites), they are one of the few entities left that are not regulated and are likely to be regulated in the future.

Gradually building momentum in Los Angeles for green schoolyards and will be hosting our own symposium in May exploring the many synergies of school greening and stormwater.
