Precisely 15(!) years ago, the inimitable Kristopher Carter — along with Chase and myself — began assembling the final master tracks for La-La Land Records' YESTERDAY WAS A LIE soundtrack album… a release facilitated by the one-and-only Jeff Bond. Whether you’re into “sci-fi noir” or not, I encourage you to take a moment to appreciate Kris’ gorgeous, melancholy fusion of sultry jazz and modern, heart-wrenching ambient beds, heralding times long past. Directing niche/cult/forgotten films is both a blessing and a curse, of course… but the opportunity to work with these artists was incomparable.

And yes — the album is still out there! Listen to it on your preferred digital service… or — better yet — snag the physical CD (no conflict here; I make nothing from it).

It’s a trip; a bittersweet one. Just keep your ears to the ground.

Just over 15 years ago, we completed post-production on a feature I directed for eOne (now Lionsgate). In those ancient days, the process of shooting films on cards or drives wasn’t yet widespread. So although our physical footage has long-since been dumped onto (redundantly backed up) HDDs, our original digital camera “negatives” (HDCAM) and final delivery digital “prints” (D5) have been stored for years. But they’re bulky, heavy, and subject to binder hydrolysis… and, even in the best conditions, they degrade over time. And while magnetic platter storage has its own long-term viability issues, archiving movies in physical formats which are essentially obsolete is probably both unwise and wasteful. They say “film is forever”… but it really isn’t.

So… the time has come to destroy and recycle — in the most environmentally friendly manner possible — these reels. It’s bittersweet; I feel like part of me will be gone. But it’s the responsible thing to do. “Energy never dies; it just transforms.” Goodbye, my lovelies.

And here’s to many more movies to come.
