Art as activism. Truth as power. Since 2015, Team Gom Sa Bopa has been using hip hop & spoken word to transform lives across The Gambia & Senegal, empowering young people to overcome social marginalization and become agents of change. USA For Africa has helped support their initiatives in promoting civic awareness and responsibility.

“As an artist myself, it made me feel that we can actually use music as a tool to call for peace and unity. A world where we uplift each other. A world where we choose truth over lies, good over evil, love over hate and peace over war. Hearing the song reminds me that positive messages can have an ever lasting impact crossing all borders.” — Ali Cham (aka Killa Ace, Founder of Team Gom Sa Bopa)

Today, 40 years ago, more than 6 million people across 16 states and 550 cities joined hands to create the longest human chain in history, stretching coast to coast across America, from New York City to Los Angeles.

The event was called Hands Across America, a nationwide movement created to raise awareness and funds for homelessness and hunger relief in the United States.

After raising over $53M in 1985 for famine relief in Africa through “We Are The World,” Ken Kragen, co-founder of USA For Africa, wanted to bring the mission closer to home. The result was one of the most ambitious charitable events ever organized, uniting people across the country for a single shared cause. | Video courtesy of USA For Africa
