What if kids could make art the same way a world-renowned artist did — using light, color, and straight lines to express how they feel inside?
That’s exactly what we did this month at with a group of incredible 4th and 5th graders. 🎨
Inspired by the work of Dan Flavin — whose iconic fluorescent light installations were just on view at in Chelsea, NYC — young artists explored how color carries emotion, then created their own glowing compositions using translucent papers, cellophane, washi tape, and laminating sheets.
The result? A Glow Gallery made entirely of their inner lights. 🌈 (Turn your sound on to hear the moment the kids realized their art was glowing!)
There was one moment that stayed with us: A student was quiet at the end, worried her artwork didn’t “change” in the light. But when we pulled it off the wall and held it up to the window, her face lit up. “Oh wow, it does!” she said. “This area looks like it’s glowing!”
Just as Flavin used color to transform the feeling of a space, these young artists used color and line to express their own “inner light” — translating their personal emotions into a luminous, visual language.
A huge thank you to our amazing volunteer Aly () from DZ for bringing the gallery world into the community and making this magic possible. And a special shoutout to our youngest and most enthusiastic workshop tester, Theo (son of GKA’s founder, Kara). We couldn’t have done the test phase without you! ☺️😉
Every light is different. Together, they make the space brighter.
