Music enhances group identity and promotes active collaboration between composers, improvisers, performers and listeners. Yet, a public’s majority may prefer past, or new styles. Sheltered institutions that cater to special interests and canonically recycle or outsource, stifle imagination, isolate talent and cloud out new local traditions. On the other hand, appeal to public opinion enables composers by attracting wider audiences. Majority rule and favorable reception thereby support our claim that public music preference catalyzes group identity. RMLF researches how respect for public music opinion benefits communities. Tell us what you think in the comments.

RMLF caught an exhibition of handpan spacedrums at the winter NAMM show in Anaheim. Handpans are idiophones, the whole instrument vibrates when struck. They’re often tuned to diatonic and pentatonic scales and their timbre is largely defined by sustained spectral envelopes. Yuki Koshimoto’s spacedrum performance in C chromatic scale displays intervallic homophony and florid, rhythmic monophony. Sustained spectral envelopes prompt listeners to perceive polyphony caused by the convergence of overtones. Many listeners find the spacedrum’s unique sound therapeutic.
