9/11 Ceremony with Sierra Madre and Altadena Rotary Clubs

My wife Hank and I attended a ceremony this morning for the 25th Anniversary of 9/11 sponsored by the City of Sierra Madre, and the Fire and Police Departments. There was great participation.

Fire Chief Brent Bartlett is a friend of ours through Hank's Sierra Madre Rotary Club. He and I served together in DESERT STORM; 'though we didn't know it at the time. He was a young Marine; I was an old soldier.

Included are some photos at the ceremony, including pictures of Sierra Madre Rotary Club, Scouts (several are members of Hank's Rotary Interact club), and spectators.

Also attached is the Chief's speech, which he gave to me after the ceremony which is quite evocative of emotions felt and memories shared.

We remember the friends we lost and think about all who died on that terrible day.

And one line stands out in the Chief's speech: “Never Forget is a promise, not a date".

During Altadena Rotary's meeting of September 10, 2026, Zoot Velasco gave the inspiration moment by relating ancient Sanskrit's 12 Rules of Being Human.

Betty Wang told us she had moved back into her home after the Eaton Fire.

Alex Atheson visited us from Foothill Catalog Foundation which has been helping rebuild Altadena since the fire.

Mark Mariscal told us about his Rotary International Shirt.

Tom Burrows was inducted into our club by Craig Cox, assisted by our President Lisa Rickard. Linda Ciarimboli sponsored Tom.

Our speaker was Victor Ozuna, US Army Corps of Engineers, who gave us lessons learned from the Eaton Fire. He also mentioned that dams are only in place to give the public enough time to get out of the way of a dam collapse.

Altadena Rotary meeting September 3, 2026, Val Zavala's husband Mark Steven Greenfield, an award-winning artist, visited the club and is seen talking with Zoot Velasco before the luncheon.

Nikki Winslow picked and led our meeting's song, the Beatles "Yellow Submarine".

Val Zavala, anchor and executive producer of "SoCal Connected" until her retirement interviewed Frank Mayor for his "Craft Talk." Frank is currently President and Chief Executive Officer of Cinevision Global Inc., a holding company that operates a number of businesses in the music, television, and film industries.

Altadena Rotary 's last summer concert August 22, 2026, saw a tribute band to Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, the “Stevie Nicks Illusion”, play their hits to Loma Alta Park’s audience.

People danced the night away. Peter Huisking and his wife, Rotary club members of Altadena and Sierra Madre led the way.

We look forward to seeing Altadena and friends next year for our 30th Annual Concert Series 2027.

During Altadena Rotary's meeting August 27, 2026, the Inspirational Moment was given by Herb Agner.

Mark Mariscal introduced the speaker, Hans Allhoff. Mark displayed a pair of shoes Hans had given him after the Fire. Hans is the President of Altadena Heritage. He told us about the laws and legislation impacting residential property owners and developers in Altadena. He said the Eaton Fire had been an urban conflagration not a wildfire.

Hans, in the beginning of his presentation did a tribute to Dolly Parton. He displayed Pl***oy Magazine October 1978 where Parton had made history as the first country music artist to appear on the cover.

Altadena Rotary held its last concert of the year August 22, 2026, at Loma Alta Park. The Stevie Nicks Illusion band performed.

Club member Rene Amy emceed and gave attendees an inspirational speech about how the community had come together to recover from our Eaton Fire

Joey Galloway told us he is trying to build his property back that was formerly Altadena Hardware. "Platinum Stitches Embroidery", owners Chell Benn and his wife Alicia, who are sponsors for our Altadena Rotary Summer Concerts 2026, came to listen to Upstream.

Friends greeted friends who have not seen each other as much since Eaton Fire. Lots of dancing!

Altadena Rotary helps lots of people with volunteerism and contributions. The tradition of service, working side by side within the club, builds strong reliable friendships. Here is one example.

From Doug Colliflower: Helping Zoot Velasco

"Some stories are years in the making, and this is one of them.

I first met Zoot when he joined our Rotary Club of Altadena. A few years later, he shared a dream with me: when he and Monette retired, they wanted to be completely mortgage-free.

That kind of goal doesn't happen overnight. To get there, they'd need to sell their longtime home and transition to something that matched their retirement goals. So, we began. For a year and a half, we explored: different neighborhoods, different types of homes, weighing every option, and never rushing the decision.

This January, we got serious. Houses, townhomes, condos, new areas, we looked at a little bit of everything. And then we found it: the one that checked nearly every box. We wrote a strong, competitive offer, went up against a crowded field… and won.

Congratulations, Zoot and Monette! But here's the thing: the job is only half done. 😉 Now we turn to phase two: preparing their beloved home for sale, building a smart marketing plan, and getting it sold so their mortgage-free dream becomes reality.
Onto the next chapter. This is exactly why I love what I do."

Post #2 for Altadena Rotary's Summer Concert August 8, 2026 featured "Upstream."

Lakewood Rotary Club helped our Club members with the concert.
We gave away earplugs for those young and old who are sensitive to loud concert music.

Friends greeting friends who have not seen each other as much since Eaton Fire. Lots of dancing!

Commander Jabari Williams, former Captain of Altadena Sheriff's Station came to visit. Don't forget, our Sheriffs need Volunteers. See Deputy Balyan at the Station for information.

Altadena WILD is looking for people to be tree stewards to replant our Trees lost in the Fire. Contact Altadena WILD for information.

The next summer concert is August 15, 2026, at Loma Alta Park, 7pm, featuring Blue Breeze Band.
