Commercials that prominently feature an AI performer will now be labeled in CA!

Governor Newsom has signed SB 1050 into law!

This law will cover all advertisements including but not limited to TV, streaming, podcast, radio, and other audio-only advertisements.

We hope this law will encourage more companies to hire human performers for their commercials, and help protect consumers from misleading ads.

A Win for ALL Californian’s!

SB 1050 is law!

NAVA had a special hand in shaping the final version of this bill by helping to remove an exemption for audio-only advertisements and by testifying multiple times in support of the bill in Sacramento.

Now, in the state of California ALL uses of prominent synthetic performers in advertisements must be labeled. Including podcast, radio, and other audio-only advertisements.

We hope this law will encourage more companies to hire human performers for their advertisements.

Congratulations and thank you to all who supported this legislation! Special thank you to Senator Ashby and their office for introducing the bill and spearheading its progression.

The National Association of Voice Actors is back in DC for the NO FAKES Act fly-in week. We are taking tons of meetings with legislators and staff members to advocate for a new intellectual property right over our voice, image, name, and likeness.

In this spirit of community and a rising tide lifting all boats, we know that we are stronger individually and as a community when we work together, share, and collaborate across differences and distance.

Soon after you arrive at this digital party, you will be paired up with another NAVA member in a Zoom breakout room to share your core area of expertise, then have the opportunity to learn about others’ areas of expertise.

We need your help! Send Governor Newsom a message telling him you support SB1050 and want it to be signed into law!

California Senate Bill 1050 (SB 1050), introduced by Senator Angelique Ashby, requires clear and conspicuous disclosures in advertisements that prominently feature synthetic digital performers. That means if a commercial includes an AI performer, it must be clearly labeled.

NAVA had a special hand in shaping the final version of this bill. A nearly identical bill passed in NY State in June, but included a carve-out for audio-only advertisements. When NAVA looked through the text of the CA version we asked Senator Ashby’s office to remove the exemption in CA, and their office agreed.

We hope this bill will encourage companies to hire human performers for their advertisements. Let’s get this bill across the finish line!

Big Tech stopped AB412 behind closed doors but they haven't stopped the 3.8 million creative workers who have joined together to help protect California's creative economy.

Please contact Assembly Member Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (916) 319-2016 and Assembly Member Ash Kalra (916) 319-2025 to thank them for their leadership in authoring and Co-Authoring this bill respectively. And please request that they bring this bill back next session.

AB-412 affects too many people to be swept away into a corner and decided in the dark.
