AB 1626 has passed the California Legislature and is headed to the desk of Governor Gavin Newsom!

This legislation will ensure coaches are better equipped to recognize signs of mental health challenges, support young athletes, and connect them with appropriate resources when needed.

We’re grateful to Asm. Jesse Gabriel for his leadership in authoring AB 1626 and advancing legislation supporting California’s coaches and youth athletes.

We look forward to seeing AB 1626 cross the finish line in the coming days.

Four cities, one Community Cup.

Play Equity Fund headed to Downey to catch Home Field Advantage's inaugural Community Cup, bringing together youth soccer teams from El Monte, Whittier, Compton, and Downey for a day of competition, community, and city pride. Thanks to Home Field Advantage for bringing these communities together through soccer and giving student-athletes a chance to represent their cities.

Sports can be rehabilitative in more ways than we can count.

Play Equity Fund recently visited Camp Afflerbaugh-Paige to capture AFFIRMATIVE ATHLETICS Atlas Bowl, the organization’s flag football championship. Affirmative Athletics works with incarcerated youth, providing them an outlet for physical activity, team building, connection, and belonging.

Through the Los Angeles Play Equity Coalition’s advocacy, $15m in grant funding was made available for organizations like Affirmative Athletics through the LA County CFCI initiative. These public dollars have expanded sport-based youth development programs for young people to experience the camaraderie, community, and refuge sports can provide.

Our Community of Practice initiative, in partnership with Nike, gathered at the LA84 Foundation campus today for a hands-on learning experience led by Angel City Sports.

CoP participants took part in adaptive sport activities including blind soccer and wheelchair basketball, while learning best practices for creating more inclusive, accessible experiences for girls. Thanks to Angel City Sports for sharing their expertise and to Nike for the continued partnership and support of the Community of Practice!

Play Equity Fund teamed up with the City of Inglewood Government and Southern California Edison (SCE) to host the Play Day Zone at the Wood Cup! With games, music, sports, giveaways, and a Belgium vs. Spain viewing party, the event brought the community together to celebrate the FIFA World Cup coming to Los Angeles and Inglewood and its impact on communities across the city.

What’s it like being a flag bearer at a FIFA World Cup match?

Through our partnership with Reyes Coca-Cola, youth from Play Equity Fund soccer partners footballforher, Nicks Kids ⚽️, LA SCORES (America Scores LA), and Home Field Advantage had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to step onto the pitch as flag bearers before the Spain vs. Belgium quarterfinal.

Last week, we were proud to announce that the Youth Sports For All Act has been fully funded by the state of California!

Sponsored by the Play Equity Fund, the Youth Sports For All Act establishes a Blue-Ribbon Commission, led by the California Health and Human Services Agency, to evaluate the state’s youth sports landscape and develop recommendations for creating a centralized system that ensures equitable access to quality sports opportunities for every child in California by 2028.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Youth Sports For All Act into law in 2025, and the California Legislature fully funded its implementation in the 2026 state budget with a historic $4 million investment.
