The day is FINALLY here. Opal is heading back to Sevilla Veterinary Hospital today for a CT scan, and we’d love some good luck for our girlie 🦋
When Opal arrived at the West LA shelter, she was just two years old. She had been abandoned, her skin and ears needed treatment, and she was having trouble coordinating her back legs.
Her X-rays showed hip dysplasia and the shelter suspected IVDD, but we still don’t have all the answers.
So today’s scan is important. We want to better understand her spine and hips, what might be causing her symptoms, and what we can do to keep her comfortable and mobile for years to come.
Her first veterinary appointment, testing, and medications cost $555.74. Today’s CT is estimated at $2,900, even after a generous $900 discount. That’s $3,455.74 in veterinary care alone, before we know what treatment she’ll need next.
Depending on the findings, we may be looking at medication, physical rehabilitation, or possibly spinal or hip surgery. We won’t know until her doctors have more information.
This is also a story about access to veterinary care. The right care isn’t always nearby or affordable. Transportation, specialist availability, time off work, and thousands of dollars in unexpected costs can stand between an animal and treatment. We don’t know the circumstances of Opal’s abandonment, and we won’t pretend to.
Rescues face these barriers too. It’s one reason Beezy’s takes on only a few dogs at a time. We work with complicated medical and behavioral cases, and each dog deserves more than a shelter exit. They need careful follow-through, committed fosters, knowledgeable veterinary partners, and the resources to adapt as we learn more.
Thankfully, Opal is thriving with her foster Hanna. Her little personality is coming out as she heals, and we can’t wait to learn what comes next. 🤍
Please wish her luck today 💫
