Repost from Afro-Latino Education & Arts Collective, Inc.
As we begin Hispanic Heritage Month, it’s time for an honest conversation about the “Black and Brown unity” we so often demand.
Latino is not a race. “Brown” is not synonymous with Latino. And we cannot demand solidarity from Black Americans while treating centuries of anti-Blackness within our own Latino communities as a conversation for “another time.”
Black Latinos are in the room. We are Black AND Latino, and we are asking our own community to look inward.
Solidarity is a relationship, not a debt. Accountability starts in our own house.
