Juneteenth commemorates the delayed but determined path to freedom for African Americans on June 19, 1865. For many of us across the African diaspora, it also echoes the stories of resistance, resilience, and rebirth across continents. 🇺🇸🌍
As African students navigating hyphenated identities—Egyptian-American, Nigerian-Canadian, Ghanaian-Jamaican-American, Ethiopian-Zambian-Sudanese—we celebrate this day not only as a moment of shared history, but as a call to keep building together and advocating for one another, regardless of where we were born.

Happy Africa Day from the National African Student Association!

Today, we celebrate the richness, resilience, and unity of our continent and its people across the globe.

As Nelson Mandela once said:
“I am not African because I was born in Africa but because Africa was born in me.”

Let us continue to honor our roots, amplify our voices, and build a future worthy of our legacy.

Just over two weeks ago, NAfSA had its second ever annual national conference in Atlanta, GA! It was so exciting seeing students all over the country come in to participate in dialogue and network with each other!

Over the next few weeks, we will share some of the insights we learned from those sessions and workshops during the conference and further showcase why the work we’re doing here in NAfSA is so important for the entire US African diaspora. So stay tuned!!

Also, we can’t forget to give a special thanks to all the people that made the conference a success. Shoutout to

The National African Student Association (NAfSA), in collaboration with Ashoka, and The Diaspora Academy (TDA) have launched the Policy Advocacy Capacity Building Program!

This exciting program aims to engage students who are interested in raising awareness on key policy issues and influence policy outcomes for systems change across Africa.

Our inaugural cohort have already completed three modules thus far and have learned so much about policy advocacy work.

Stay tuned to hear from some of the participants over the course of the next few weeks about their experiences!

The following events (in no particular order) are just a glimpse into the amazing work happening across all our chapters in 2024. ASA chapters nationwide fostered community and celebrated African culture.

Missouri State’s ASA hosted cultural celebrations like a “Fake Wedding” and “African Carnival.” Michigan State’s events included “Afrobeat Jeopardy” and a “Culture Show.” Georgia State focused on community with “Taste of Africa” and an Olympics event. Virginia State offered diverse events from a Spelling Bee to “Rep Your Flag” night. The University of Toledo addressed global issues with “Hope Through Awareness,” celebrated pop culture with “Y2K/Nollywood Night,” and hosted a Thanksgiving dinner and “Ivillage” culinary event.

We can’t wait to see what 2025 brings!
