In this interview, we sat down with Ferrai, one of our alumni, who shared her housing journey before discovering Butterfly's Haven. Her story highlights a struggle that many youth in our communities face—nights spent uncertain about where they would sleep, sometimes with a family member, other times with a friend—yet never finding a place to call truly their own. This constant instability brought overwhelming stress that no young person should endure. Butterfly’s Haven aims to lighten that burden by removing the stress and affirming that housing is a human right.

In our final installment of "Letter to Younger Self" for Foster Care Awareness Month, we share a heartfelt message from one of our alumni that truly resonates. It’s a powerful reminder that the struggles, tears, and lessons we face in youth forge the strength we carry into adulthood. As they beautifully put it: "Every hardship, every tear, every lesson shaped the strength I carry today." This sentiment encapsulates the resilience and hope we all need to remember. It’s a message that should inspire and stay deeply rooted in the hearts of everyone, especially our former foster youth.

In this fifth part of our "Letter to My Younger Self" series, we present a brief yet impactful message about releasing self-blame and embracing hope. Sometimes, simple words hide profound truths. Dom’s letter reminds us of an essential truth every child should hear: you’re not to blame, and you’ve always been a good kid. Healing doesn't guarantee a smooth journey—it simply means we continue moving forward. Thanks to Dom for reminding us that, despite difficulties, the journey is always valuable.

In this inspiring fourth installment of our "Letter to My Younger Self" series, we celebrate the extraordinary power of creativity, self-love, and resilience. For many former foster youth, life's challenges can sometimes dim the sparkle of their unique talents, dreams, and inner magic. This letter serves as a heartfelt reminder to nurture your inner artist, trust your journey, and recognize that you are more than enough just as you are. Remember, while your past has shaped your strength, it does not define your future or the incredible potential within you. Thank you for sharing your beautiful words, your art, and your story with us. Keep shining your light brightly.

In this third installment of Letter to My Younger Self, we share a story that truly demonstrates that higher education is absolutely attainable for former foster youth.
For years, studies have shown that foster youth often face greater barriers than their peers when it comes to completing higher education. But over time, we’ve also seen growth, resilience, and change.
Carmen is a shining example of that progress. She is on her way to earning two Associate of Science degrees and has opportunities at some of the top schools in California. Her journey reminds us that obstacles can be overcome, and that our past does not define our future. We are so proud of you, Carmen. Keep soaring.

The second letter in our installment of "letter to younger self" truly highlights an experience common among former foster youth: overwhelming pressure to have life figured out overnight while enduring periods of instability and uncertainty. Her letter also serves as a lovely reminder that healing takes time, setbacks are inevitable, and growth is always possible when you don't give up on yourself. Our past may influence who we are, but it does not define our destination in life. Thank you, Krissy, for reminding us of that.

May is Foster Care Awareness Month, and at Butterfly's Haven, this time holds special importance because many of our participants are former foster youth. Aging out of foster care doesn't mean that experience stops shaping who they are. Just like last year, several of our participants and alumni wrote heartfelt letters to their younger selves, reflecting on their growth, changes, and how the system influenced them—yet didn't define them. Here is one of those heartfelt, meaningful, and caring letters. Over the next week, we'll be sharing more inspiring letters from our wonderful community!
