Say hello to Davis Reinhart (.reinhart), our third featured composer in our 2026 Next Up! cohort šŸ¤—

Come join the wolf pack with Davis’ brass quintet ā€œ21ā€ on May 9, 7pm at Pasadena Presbyterian Church. See you there!

Davis Reinhart is a composer, pianist, trumpet player, and music educator based in Los Angeles, CA. He is a recent graduate of the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater and Dance, with a degree in music composition and minor in performing arts management and entrepreneurship. He is the President and Co-Founder of the nonprofit organization, Muffin Music Inc..

Growing up in Buellton and Santa Ynez Valley, California, Davis was drawn towards all facets of the performing arts, including both theater and dance. While attending Santa Ynez Valley High School, he was a member of the Santa Ynez Valley Jazz Band, Santa Barbara Strings, SYVHS Theater Group, SYVHS Jazz Club, and Fossemalle Dance Studios.

During those formative years in high school, he spent a summer as a collaborative piano student at Music Academy of the West’s MERIT Program where he first met some of his current friends and musical collaborators. By 2019, he began to focus his attention on composition, attending the Brevard Music Center’s summer music festival in North Carolina, where he studied with Greg Simon, Robert Aldridge, and David Dzubay.

Following high school, Davis spent four years attending the University of Michigan where he had the opportunity to work on a wide array of compositional, performance, educational, and administrative projects. Most notably, in 2021, Davis was commissioned to write, record, and produce an original composition for the City of Buellton, thanks to a generous grant provided by the Buellton Arts and Culture Committee and the Buellton City Council. This sparked the beginning of a new project and chapter, focused on giving back to the Santa Ynez Valley community where he grew up and ultimately led to the formation of the nonprofit organization, Muffin Music Inc., which was incorporated in 2022.

Meet our second composer from the 2026 Next Up! cohort, Madeline Barrett (.m.barrett)! We are honored to perform her piece ā€œElegyā€ on May 9, 7pm at Pasadena Presbyterian Church.

Madeline Barrett, based in Los Angeles, CA, is a contemporary composer of concert music striving to evoke imagery of nature and foster human connection. Raised in Phoenix, AZ, she often draws inspiration from the world around her, whether it be oceans of the North American coast, the deserts of Arizona, or the softly bustling streets of Boston. In her compositions, Madeline employs a language of interwoven tertian and non-tertian harmonies, undulating ostinati, and diverse rhythmic landscapes, which derives from an eclectic group of influences, from Baroque counterpoint to French impressionism to 1980s popular music to American jazz. Studying classical piano from the age of 3, she grew up with various styles of music as an important part of everyday life and discovered the beauty of music does not only come from its melodies and harmonies, but rather the ways through which it invokes thought, stimulation, and communication, an ideal which informs her artistic processes.

Madeline attended the Cortona Sessions for New Music in the summer of 2017, where she won the Iron Composer Competition, and the Vienna Summer Music Festival Composer’s forum in the summer of 2018. Most recently, she studied in the Global Academy at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy, during which time her string quartet, BLOOM, was premiered in the Primavera Chigiana Concert Series. She is a recent winner of the 7th Annual Boston New Music Initiative Young Composer Competition for her work The Flowers That Close at Night.

Madeline has a Bachelor of Music in Composition from Chapman University and a Master of Arts from UCLA, and past composition instructors include Jeffrey Holmes, Sean Heim, Vera Ivanova, and Derrick Skye. She is recently received her PhD in composition from UCLA under the tutelage of Ian Krouse and Richard Danielpour.

Have you ever wondered what ingredients you need to bake a brass band? Take a look at our recipe card for everything you need!

You might see some unfamiliar instruments in our recipe. That’s because brass band comes with its own unique set of instruments. Many members have taken on an extra challenge this cycle to learn and master a new instrument in a short time, which is similar to what we see in some of those baking challenges. Learning a new instrument comes with similar frustrations to the ones bakers face in the tent, so we took some of their funniest quips to show how some of our members might be feeling this cycle.
