Build a School in Burma

Build a School in Burma Our mission is to build schools in underserved communities in Burma (Myanmar) to educate children and give them a chance for a better future.

According to the United Nations, Myanmar (Burma) is among the poorest countries in the world. Annual per capita income is about $460. For half a century, Burma has been largely isolated from the outside world. Rural Burmese villages often do not have running water or electricity and are not connected by roads passable in the rainy season. Food is cooked over wood or charcoal fires. Almost everyone

is a farmer. Formalized health care is not available or affordable. Many villages do not have schools so children have limited or no access to education. Farm families often have 3 to 7 children. Lacking literacy and numeracy, they have scant prospects in the 21st Century. We can help improve the lives of children in Burmese villages. Founded in 2010, Build a School in Burma (BSB) raises money to help build schools in villages and other underserved areas. BSB completed a first school in 2011 and we are currently at work on a second school. We are asking you to help by making a donation. Generous donors and volunteers pay all of BSB’s expenses, so every donated dollar goes to Burma for building schools. Contributions are tax deductible in accordance with IRS rules and regulations. Build a School in Burma is a member of “Partners for Better Futures”, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, federal tax ID number (EIN) 82-2274918. Donations are tax-deductible for U.S. taxpayers to the extent allowed by law.

Dear Friends of Myanmar,

Some of you have enquired about how to help victims of the devastating Myanmar earthquake. There is no shortage of donation portals.

Earthquake destruction and the abrupt cut off of USAID funds for refugee food prompted Build a School in Burma and our umbrella non-profit Partners for Better Futures to help organize three relief efforts:

1 Food aid for Lisu refugees in Kachin State: Tens of thousands of Lisu people displaced by fighting have lost meager monthly food rations previously funded to by USAID. Working with partner New Life Villages we will help provide rice and other food staples to this community.

2 Drinking water and emergency food for Monastic School: Long time partner school Phaung Daw Oo was damaged in the earthquake but fortunately no lives were lost. With over 1000 resident students they have an acute need for purified drinking water and emergency food.

3 Food, water purification devices and tarpaulin shelters for Sagaing earthquake victims: We will partner with a local, grass roots organization to deliver these badly needed emergency relief supplies to families in a community near the earthquake epicenter.

BSB and PBF have been able to fund most of the planned assistance from available funds and some unexpected donations. However, we remain short of being able to complete all of the help intended. If you would like to help, you can donate in two ways:

1. By writing a check to Partners for Better Futures Myanmar Humanitarian Relief and mailing it to PBF at 1275 Fairway Drive, Los Altos, CA 94024. We receive check donations without any fee deduction.

2. Making an on line donation through the BSB donation page: Click the link below. Please also shoot me an email letting us know your on line donation was for humanitarian relief:

All of the money you donate (net of Click and Pledge on-line fees) will go to victims in Myanmar without any overhead costs. Your generosity is deeply appreciated.

A message from Bob Cornwell, founder of Build a School in Burma (BSB).

Dear friends of BSB:

Once again we we ask for your contribution to support BSB’s work to promote the education of Burma’s most vulnerable children. Thank you for your past support which has helped us build, renovate or expand 86 much needed schools to date!

This has been a year of convulsion and change around the world. In Burma rebel forces made territorial strides against the military, which has responded with indiscriminate bombing and shelling. The threat of conscription sent many, especially Myanmar’s young adults, fleeing to other countries. Migrants poured into Thailand, where by some estimates there are now 5 million Myanmar people (out of a population of 50+ million). The loss of many of its best educated and most productive citizens has set Myanmar’s future back.

Despite this upheaval BSB has preserved. We have confirmed that the vast majority of the schools built in Myanmar since 2011 have survived and most are still in use as schools. With your support we have completed, renovated or expanded an additional eight schools in 2024, four in Thailand and four more in Myanmar.

If you have already donated, my apologies for asking again. Best wishes to all for a better 2025!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We'd like to express our gratitude to all our partners. For this project specifically, BSB's partner is SAO BIEN - Room for Education.

This outstanding school is led by a dynamic principal and has won repeated awards as the best of its kind. Because of his cooperative relationship with the Thai authorities, New Wave students are receiving standard childhood inoculations from the Thai Ministry of Health. A Thai language program for students helps them navigate their new home. Almost 170 students are studying here in grades Kindergarten through 11. New Wave uses the new Myanmar national curriculum adopted by the NLD government prior to the coup and will add a 12th and final grade next year. Because the school is on rented land with only a five year promise of occupancy, BSB country director Ko Naing designed a steel frame building that can be disassembled and moved to a new site if necessary. Partner NGO Sao Bien helped fund construction of the new structure.

A New School

Build a School in Burma and our partners Sao Bien and Chedi Kho Church are on the verge of completing a new school for Burmese migrant children near Mae Sot, Thailand. Only the furniture remains to be delivered. Partner NGO Sao Bien donated half the funding, Chedi Kho Church provided the land and some labor while while BSB managed the construction and furnished the balance of the funds. The Church provides teachers and learning materials.

Previously the students, whose parents work on surrounding farms, studied in cramped spaces in the church and cafeteria—mostly without tables, desks or chairs. Now they have a purpose-built learning environment where they study a Myanmar curriculum and Thai language. But not surprisingly, the children are more delighted with their new playground:
