Happy ! Most humanists would agree that Charles Darwin is one of history's finest and most influential thinkers, and we think it's only fitting that we should celebrate this every year on his birthday, 12 February.
Darwin's theory of natural selection brilliantly and elegantly explains the diversity of life on Earth. But that's not all. It inspired whole fields of scientific inquiry, and created a framework to help us understand so much more of how the world works, including our minds and our social instincts. Most people now think our tendencies to be kind, to help others, and to extend our sympathies to kin and strangers alike have an evolutionary basis because these are the sublimely human traits which have allowed our species not just to survive, but to thrive.
Join in in the celebration of our common humanity and celebrate Darwin Day by liking or sharing this post. And if you're coming to our Darwin Day lecture tonight with Eugenie Scott, we'll see you there!
