Small Business Highlight:
Atomic Learners Academy

Atomic Learners Academy, located at 1350 Central Ave, Suite 202, is a community-centered learning and movement space that brings together after-school enrichment, dance classes, and judo under one roof. After school camp offers an energizing mix of physical movement and creative exploration, blending a variety of exciting experiences such as judo, hip-hop, neurogymnastics, chess, non-standard math, and science kits. The dance studio (informally known as Kaboom Dance Studio) also offers adult classes including belly dance, zumba, lady styling bachata, and salsa partnering.

“As a clinical psychologist and dance enthusiast, I envisioned a small business that fills gaps I saw in the community. Families often have to choose between intellectual enrichment and physical activity for their children, so I wanted to bring both together in one high-quality after-school camp. Our development classes are led by highly qualified instructors, including two PhDs and a judo black belt, reflecting Los Alamos’ commitment to excellence in science and education. For adults, my vision was to create a welcoming dance space offering unique styles that are accessible to beginners and inspiring for experienced dancers. I love what I do because the energy that I send out is reciprocated.” -Margarita

“I’ve been in business for 24 years and it’s the hardest job you’ll ever love. Shopping local has done really well for small businesses. It’s a reminder to the community to support the businesses here. I take it very seriously.”-Anna

Little Bird Yoga Studio

Heather Quinn is the owner of Little Bird Yoga Studio. The studio, located at 2101 Trinity Dr., Suite A3, offers yoga, barre, and mat Pilates classes, as well as the occasional workshop.

Heather says, “I love teaching and being part of a community.” She and fellow instructors Kathy Gursky and Jamie Radenbaugh create classes for all levels and ranges of mobility, and they invite you to shop local by trying drop-in classes, punch passes, and memberships. “Joining your local studio means that you can be part of a community that is part of your community.” Heather also supports other small businesses. “Aspen Copies does most of our printing. Borrow a Baker keeps us in treats for our retreats and parties. Most Saturdays we are out in the community having coffee and a snack together after Saturday Sloth yoga class.” The studio’s plants and rotating art by local artists make it a welcoming space to begin or deepen your yoga practice

"When you shop locally, you're dealing with business owners that live here and are invested in the town and want to provide the right thing for the people who live here. We know what our neighbors and friends want so we try to provide for them. Small businesses do need to make a profit if you can, but you also want to create community and community usually starts with downtown." -Karen

"The success of a small business depends on the owner's ability to understand and respond to what the community wants and needs. Costumers should feel free to make purchasing decisons based on quality, value and accessibility without guilt to support local business. If a customer feels guilty coming into my store, then I have failed." -Jill
