Most people get sad when they get demoted.

Not in Rotary.

In Rotary, we throw a party!

And not just any party—we gather all our friends together to lovingly roast the President who is getting “demoted.”

What a fantastic evening we had celebrating President Randy Hill! A huge thank you to Diana and Randy for opening their home and hosting a packed house. Honestly, you would think fewer people would show up for a guy who was only an okay president… but the crowd had other plans!

Rotarians came ready with stories, compliments, laughter, and just enough roasting to keep Randy humble. The jokes were plentiful, the memories were priceless, and the appreciation for Randy’s year of leadership was undeniable.

Thank you, Randy, for your dedication, service, and sense of humor throughout the year. We appreciate all you’ve done for our club and community.

And now, we raise a glass to Anne as she takes the helm. Here’s to another amazing Rotary year ahead!

Today was a very special day at the Rotary Club of Los Alamitos, Cypress, and Seal Beach as we gathered to celebrate the lives of Diane and Dave Appling.

The room was standing room only, with more people in attendance than we have ever had at a Rotary meeting. It was a beautiful reflection of the countless lives Diane and Dave touched through their kindness, generosity, friendship, and service.

We shared heartfelt memories, lots of laughter, and a few tears as friends and family recounted the many stories that made this remarkable couple so loved. Their impact on our community will never be forgotten.

Thank you to everyone who came together to honor two truly extraordinary people. ❤️

Today marked President Randy Hill’s final meeting as club president.

When asked about the most impactful accomplishments of the year, Randy immediately shifted the spotlight to the club and its members.

Among the highlights he shared were the success of the Word for Peace initiative led by Marlys and Midge, the establishment of the Finance Committee to help strengthen the club’s future, and the many contributions of club leaders and volunteers who kept programs and meetings running smoothly throughout the year.

Randy also recognized the incredible fundraising efforts that resulted in significant support for local nonprofits. As always, he credited the members rather than himself, reminding us that great things happen when people work together toward a common purpose.

Thank you, Randy, for your leadership, humility, and dedication this year. Congratulations on a successful term and a job well done!

Sometimes people get empathy and compassion mixed up. Empathy means feeling what another person is feeling. Sympathy means understanding what someone is feeling and reaching out with care. Compassion is the willingness to help relieve another person’s suffering.

One thing Midge reminded us is to be thoughtful with our words. When someone is grieving or facing a difficult challenge, we often want to comfort them by saying, “I know exactly what you’re going through.” But unless we have lived that exact experience, we really don’t.

Instead, we can say, “I understand this is difficult,” or “I’m here for you if you need anything.” Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer is our presence, our understanding, and our willingness to listen.

A simple but powerful reminder: don’t assume you know exactly how someone feels. Let them know you care, that you are there for them, and that they don’t have to face their struggles alone.

Looking for a lunch break that comes with inspiration, community impact, and zero boring PowerPoint slides?

Join us Tuesday, June 2, as we welcome Yvette Staggs from Casa Youth Shelter.

Yvette will share how Casa Youth Shelter is helping local youth and families through crisis intervention, counseling, education, and leadership programs that make a real difference in our community.

Come learn, connect, and leave a little smarter than when you arrived. We can’t promise you’ll solve all the world’s problems over lunch, but you’ll definitely hear about people who are working on it every day.

Please make your lunch reservation today. We look forward to seeing you there!

Congratulations to the Class of 2026!

What a fantastic day celebrating our graduates! We loved meeting so many students as they enjoyed the free hot dogs and water provided by our Rotary Club and Kiwanis Club. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the day such a success.

We are also incredibly proud of our fellow Rotarian, Lina Lumme, who served as a Grand Marshal of this year’s parade. It was a wonderful celebration of our graduates, their achievements, and the bright futures ahead of them.

Congratulations, Class of 2026—we can’t wait to see what you accomplish next!

Making friendships as adults can be hard. Life gets busy with work, family, responsibilities, and packed schedules. Weeks go by fast, and meaningful connections can easily get pushed aside.

That is one of the many things we love about being part of the Rotary International. What starts as a lunch meeting often turns into genuine friendships, shared laughs, community impact, and people who truly show up for one another.

Our recent lunch meeting was a great reminder that service clubs are about more than projects and events. They are about connection, friendship, support, and building a community where everyone feels welcome. Plus, there is always someone encouraging you to volunteer for “just one more thing.”

Rotarian Lina Lumme represented the Rotary Club of Los Alamitos, Cypress and Seal Beach at the 14th Annual Cypress Police Appreciation Luncheon. We were proud to recognize 2025 Officer of the Year Officer Jordan Kelley for his dedication to keeping our community safe every single day.

The Rotary presented Officer Kelley with a special clock as a reminder that while criminals never punch out, neither does great police work. Thank you for all you do for our community.

Some Rotary meetings check the box. Others remind you exactly why you joined.

Today’s luncheon was the second kind.

We had the privilege of hearing from Chip Marchbank, whose story of resilience and service is as powerful as it is inspiring. A polio survivor who turned challenges into purpose, Chip has spent his career lifting others up, from his work in sports medicine at Golden West College to leading student support programs that help so many cross the finish line.

You could feel the room shift as he spoke. A reminder that perseverance is not just a word, it’s a daily choice, and that real impact comes from showing up for others again and again.

Grateful for speakers who bring heart, perspective, and purpose to our Rotary community.
