Know a high school student interested in Environmental Engineering? Check out our Environmental Engineering summer academy, only $150:
Engineering Academy: Use math, science, and technology to act as environmental scientists and engineers protecting and restoring scarce water resources to protect the 1.6 billion people in the world who are projected to lack clean drinking water by the year 2030. Thanks to generous support from the Woodard and Curran Foundation, students can attend this academy for $150.

These programs are open to high school students entering grades 10, 11, or 12 in the Fall 2024. Spending almost a full week on campus allows students to explore our beautiful campus and experience college life to its fullest extent.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Rachel Gibson has worked on numerous research and service projects during her time at Saint Francis University while also exceling in the classroom. As a senior, she has worked as a geochemical consultant for MineraLogic LLC, provided service to local watershed groups through our Center for Watershed Research and Service, and maintained a 3.94 GPA! For her excellence inside and outside the classroom, we recognize Rachel Gibson with the Environmental Engineering Outstanding Senior Award.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: You've seen Matt Berzonsky (left) here before, and this time we are celebrating Matt and his gifts of service. The Margaret Dunn award recognizes an environmental engineering major who has performed exemplary volunteer service in the area of environmental monitoring and restoration. This year’s awardee, Matthew Berzonsky, has been a tireless volunteer for SFU’s Center for Watershed Research and Service. While Matt has worked hard in the classroom and maintained a superb academic record, he has also been active outside the classroom working with watershed groups, regional reclamationists, and his fellow classmates to carry out activities ranging from trash clean up to water quality monitoring to research on novel nutrient management strategies. After graduation, Matt will be pursuing a Ph.D. in Penn State’s environmental engineering program where we hope that he will continue to follow in the footsteps of Margaret Dunn by using quality technical skills to make contributions to the common good.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Nicole Himes is an environmental engineering sophomore who is receiving a new award, the Joshua Paul Hanlon Award. This award is given to an major in the engineering programs who is a graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle High School, in honor of Josh Hanlon by his father, Dr. Bill Hanlon. Josh passed away as a young man and his family is honoring him with this gift for a student like Nicole, who exemplifies success in the classroom complemented with activities such as her work with the Environmental Action Society, one of the most active clubs on campus, which she is president of. With thanks to Dr. Bill Hanlon, we award the inaugural Josh Paul Hanlon Award to Nicole Himes.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Vittoria LaRosa (shown here with her academic advisor, a very proud Dr. Wagner), a double major in environmental engineering and biology, has conducted independent research (with research advising by our post-doctoral fellow, Dr. Ben Roman) quantifying the phosphorus uptake rate and storage capacity of duckweed as a sustainable method for combatting nutrient pollution. In addition, she has assisted with federally funded research involving the cotreatment of acid-mine drainage and municipal wastewater, which she has presented at the Pennsylvania Water Environment Association’s annual technical conference. For her tireless efforts, we recognize Vittoria LaRosa with the Environmental Engineering Outstanding Research Award.

DEADLINE EXTENDED for our outstanding Engineering Design Summer Academy! If you are a high school student or have friends or family who are high schoolers, please consider a week a SFU learning and doing engineering with our faculty. The cost is only $500 for a week: you can barely feed a high schooler for that price! And there is excellent financial aid for students to apply to.

See https://www.francis.edu/steam-summer-academies for details. It's easy to apply, and our academy alumni are so happy with their experiences. Come spend a week (or two weeks) with us!

The STEAM Summer Academies are one-week, residential, immersive programs for high school students who are currently in grades 10 and 11 (and are at least 15 years old) and are interested in pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering, arts, or mathematics. This year we are offering program...
