Fayetteville, May 23 - An unidentified man about 65 years old, shot himself through the head on the University of Arkansas campus this morning as the students were passing in to their classes. He left a note signed "A Stranger
from Texas," in which he said he was too old to work, too honest to steal and too proud to beg. His clothing was marked "J.E.S." and he was an Odd Fellow of Belton, Texas and also a Mason and Knight of Pythias. He said in his note that he had once been in good circumstances.

Mrs. Sarah T. Farmer of Lorena, Texas passed on Tuesday April 4th after a brief illness.

Sarah was born Sarah Lou Thompson on December 6, 1934, in Lorena, Texas. Her mother Rilda Aerl Thompson was a Granddaughter of Daniel Aerl, the founder of 'Aerl Station', which later became known as 'Lorena'.

Sarah married Don Farmer in 1959, and they were married for 28 years until his death in 1987.

As a young woman, Sarah served in the U.S. Air Force. After her active duty service she worked most of her life in jobs connected to the Air Force, and later to the Veterans Administration.

After retiring, she and her husband Don enjoyed traveling, Square Dancing, various hobbies including genealogy and being with their friends and relatives. Of these pursuits, Sarah MOST enjoyed simply visiting with her friends and family.

She was proud of her 'pioneer heritage' as she was a 100% descendant of Texas pioneers. Her Great Grandfather Daniel Aerl, came to the area that became Lorena in 1849. She was a fourth generation Lorena resident, and her home stands on the remains of what was once the Daniel Aerl Farm.

Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Don Farmer, brother, US Army Air Corps Lieutenant Clarence Garner Thompson Jr, brother, Louis Aerl Thompson Sr, her father Clarence Garner Thompson Sr., and her mother Rilda Aerl Thompson: all of Lorena.

Sarah is survived by her sister, Lorna Thompson Burnitt, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and many dear friends.

After a viewing on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 from 11- 1 p.m. at Grace Gardens Funeral Home a Graveside Service will be held at 2 p.m. at the Lorena Cemetery.

John Ivan Taverner passed away on August 22, 2017, after an earthly life which was richly blessed by God above.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM, Monday, August 28, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. Graveside Services will be at 10 AM, Tuesday, August 29, 2027, at the Lorena Cemetery in Lorena, Texas.

John was born July 6, 1943, to Ivy George and Ina May Taverner in Long Beach, California. He grew up in Blythe, California, where he loved running track and field at Palo Verde High School. Being the oldest of eleven children, he learned early in life that life is best lived with nothing more than the love of the family and friends that surround you.

In 1966, he graduated from Kearney State College in Nebraska. While there, he met the love of his life, Karen Lu Cherry. On October 8, 1965, they were united in marriage and were blessed with three children: Brenda, Bill and Betty.

In 2002, after many years working in the retail industry, raising a family together and putting three kids through college, John and Karen achieved their lifelong dream and opened the Center Street Antique Mall in Lorena, TX. John and Karen loved the community of Lorena. Their time in Lorena has blessed them both with many local neighbors as well as long distance "antiquers" who over the years have become lifelong friends. Customers and friends alike were always blessed with a friendly chat and one of his great stories that were guaranteed to put a smile on their face.

In addition, John was also a member of the Journey Lorena Church, where he served as a board member. He also served on the Economic Development Committee for the City of Lorena, and for almost a decade he served as a board member of the Lorena Cemetery Association.

Those who knew John, remember him as a quiet man with a huge servant's heart. He was an amazing husband, an incredible father, an awesome grandfather, a caring uncle and a great friend. He made everyone feel like they were loved, because they were loved. He was a gracious man not just because of his faith in Jesus Christ as his Saviour, but because he also lived out this same faith every day in a community with those God had entrusted to his care. He will be truly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivy and Ina Taverner.

Survivors include his wife, Karen; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Mike Smith; son and daughter-in-law and 4 grandchildren, Bill and Donielle Taverner and Ryan, Blake, Seth and Sofia; daughter and son-in-law and 3 grandchildren, Betty and Pat Hart and Alison, Leah and Daniel. His siblings and spouses include Margaret Owens, Dorothy Roybal and Keith, Bruce Taverner and Linda, Jim Taverner and Melinda, Joe Taverner and Kathy, Susan Unverzagt and Tom, Tom Taverner and Diane, Sara Taverner, Kathy Taverner, Jenny Michaels and Don. He was also blessed with numerous nieces and nephews.

John Banks, II Obituary

John W. Banks II, of Lorena, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loved ones. A graveside funeral service will be held at 10 AM, Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at Lorena Cemetery.

John was born August 17, 1940 in Fort Worth, TX to John W. Banks and June Banks. From an early age, he displayed an interest in the care of exotic animals. This interest led him to work as a zookeeper in several zoos throughout Texas including the Fort Worth Zoo and Houston Zoo. He especially enjoyed working with reptiles and attended numerous American Zoological Association conferences across the United States which resulted in numerous lifelong friendships. During his time at the Houston Zoo, he met Jo Ann Gore and they married in a Christmas ceremony in Olean, NY on December 27, 1967.

John continued to work with exotic animals throughout his life and even traveled with Jo Ann to locales as far away as New Guinea to collect specimens. He maintained an animal compound in Lorena, TX which housed various species such as Galapagos tortoises, wallabies, marmosets, pythons, antelopes and emus. After his career in animal sales, he lived a peaceful life as a loving husband and father. Despite his longtime interest in exotic animals, John was especially adored by multiple family dogs. He could frequently be found enjoying the wildlife present in his backyard and watching classic Western TV series. He will always be remembered for his practical jokes, his devotion to his family, and colorful stories from his days working in "the reptile house".

He is survived by his wife, his son, his brothers, and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Waco Baha'i Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Nature Conservancy.

Jennie Joyce Simons May, of Woodway, Texas, passed from this life to her eternal life, on the morning of May 12, 2019, Mother’s Day.

Funeral services will be 1 pm Friday, May 17, at First Baptist Church Hewitt, 301 First St., Hewitt, with Pastors Chris Sammons and Roy Marshall officiating. Burial will follow at Lorena Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 pm Thursday May 16, at Pecan Grove Funeral Home, 3124 Robinson Dr., Waco.

Jennie was known by many names depending on how she knew you. To her family, she was Joyce, to her friends she was Jennie, she was wife to Ray, Mom to Renay, and to her grandson, she was Neena.

She was born July 5, 1940, in Asa, Texas, or as she would say, on the Brazos River Bottom, to Lonzo Luther Simons and Maud Hickox Simons. Jennie was the eldest of four children, and was preceded in death by her parents and “little sister”, Linda Wacill Simons. She was raised in the community of Rosenthal, and attended Lorena Schools, and graduated in 1958.

n February 20, 1960, Jennie married her true love and high school sweetheart, Marshall Ray May, in Lorena, Texas. They recently celebrated 59 years of marriage, and through the years, their love never wavered, and was a testament to a true Christian example of how a marriage should be. Whether it was when they taught young married Sunday school classes, or when they supported each other through the trials of sickness, and good health, they were always together supporting and loving each other. Jennie and Ray were faithful members of Hewitt First Baptist Church for over fifty years.

Jennie retired from McLennan County, where she worked in the Elections office and the Auditors office. She also worked at the church as its financial secretary as well as its church clerk prior to working for the county, and was her brother’s bookkeeper for his automotive business.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband, Ray; her daughter, Jennie Renay May Gwin; her son-in-law, Roger Gwin; and grandson, Logan Gwin, who was her pride and joy, and his fiancé Lauren Van Ryswyk; Brothers, Truman Simons of Waco, Texas, Randy Simons (Patricia) of Valley Mills, Texas; Brother-in-law, Jack May (Betty), of Rolla, Missouri; nieces, Jody May Oakes (Gary), Kelly Simons DiCorte (Billy), Rebecca Simons, Adrianna Simons Suaste (Angel); nephews, Jack May (Jeanie) and Jason Simons, as well many extended family members, cousins, and cherished friends. Jennie never met a stranger, and once you knew her, you were family.

Opal W. (Cummings) Littlefield, 97, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at Crestview Nursing Home on Lakeshore Dr. in Waco. The funeral will be held on Monday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building, 7201 Viking Drive, Waco. Friends will be received for a viewing at 9 a.m. at the Church.

Opal was born Sept. 16, 1915, in Garvin, Okla. She retired as the office manager in the 1980s after working 25 years at the JC Penney store in Barstow, Calif. She was previously employed by Sears as a credit manager and during WWII as an Air Traffic Controller at Norton AFB in San Bernardino, Calif.

Opal was a member of the Waco First Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was an avid member of the County Home extension Homemakers group, and was active both on the local level and loved attending their yearly convention. She was on the Cemetery board for the Lorena Cemetery where she will be buried next to her husband, RW, of 65 years.

Opal loved to read. She subscribed to and read multiple magazines, and also liked to do line puzzles. She loved friends and always had lots of women friends who liked her. She enjoyed the Christmas season and decorating her home and showing it to visitors. She also loved to raise flowers and feed the hummingbirds.

Opal was preceded in death by her husband, RW Littlefield, in 1998 after being married 65 years; parents, Mac and Ethyl Cummings; sisters, Lola and Dorothy; and brothers, Billy, Clifton, Elton and Kenneth.

She is survived by her daughter, Winona Baugh of Waco; sons, Haskell Littlefield of Oregon, and Clinton Littlefield of Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great and great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Dale Tennill; sister, Teresa Martin; his grandmother and grandfather Tennill; grandmother, Erna Elizabeth Stade Howard; and his grandfather, Benjamin Robert Stade.
