Hemlock Farms Conservancy

Hemlock Farms Conservancy A nonprofit, conserving and protecting the environment. Visit our website: hfconservancy.org All are welcome to join our efforts.

Hemlock Farms Conservancy began in 2009 as a concept of a group of conservation minded HFCA staff and community members. These individuals saw the need to educate others about the natural resources of the greater Pike County, PA area. Their desire has become an active volunteer group that works hard to conserve, protect, and sustain the forested ecosystem that is so beloved by Pike County resident

s and visitors. Hemlock Farms Conservancy has raised awareness of environmental issues through educational activities, guided outdoor events and trail walks, camp events, and partnership with other conservation entities. Conservancy has also provided funding and scholarships for organizations and students within Hemlock Farms and Pike County. All of this is accomplished through the efforts of an all-volunteer Board of Trustees and staff. These volunteers give generously of their time, talent, and treasure. Hemlock Farms Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization as described by the Internal Revenue Code. Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Our Mission: As stewards of the close relationship between people and the environment, Hemlock Farms Conservancy seeks to conserve, protect, and sustain our forested natural resources. We accomplish this through education, funding, and support of projects in Hemlock Farms and the greater Pike County area.

Human behavior makes the biggest difference for a cleaner planet. Do the right thing and deposit trash in a trash can—NOT in our lakes and ponds.

Many birds will take flight and migrate north tonight into Wednesday. Help make their journey safer by turning off unnecessary outdoor lights which can confuse and disorient birds during flight.

🌲Forest Fact🌲

Spring might mean warmer weather and longer days, but in Pennsylvania it also marks the start of wildfire season.

Even if the ground feels damp from rain or melting snow, dead leaves, twigs, and last year’s grasses can dry out quickly. With low humidity, sunshine reaching the forest floor, and breezy conditions, it doesn’t take much for a fire to start.

In fact, 99% of wildfires in Pennsylvania are caused by people. Small sparks from debris burning, campfires, or fireworks can quickly turn into something much bigger.

🌱 Before you burn this spring, check local conditions and ask yourself: Is burning really necessary?

Today is Earth Day. Let’s protect the local environment and stay informed to prevent wildfires. Follow community burn bans and use EXTREME caution when using equipment like leaf blowers and mowers that can cause a spark. Read this post from DCNR and stay informed to understand how rapidly fire risk changes from day to day.

4/22/2026: Overnight precipitation and expected showers today have decreased the fire danger. That said, we are anticipating some dry weather through the beginning of the weekend ahead of more rain on Sunday. The forest canopy towards the northern end of the district, as well as the higher elevations has not yet developed. Consequentially, this allows for quicker drying of the fine fuels on the forest floor. Our district staff responded to several smaller fires yesterday, so the possibility of new starts over the next few days exists. Always remember to be careful with fire and when using equipment that could cause a spark. Thanks!

A fed bear is a dead bear. Human behavior is key to keeping bears and humans safe. DO NOT feed wildlife—purposely or accidentally. Replace winter bird feeders with bird baths or plant native trees and plants to attract feathered friends in warmer months. Do not feed domestic or feral animals outdoors. Do not leave any food or drinks in your car AND lock your cars so that bears will not get inside and explore. And always put your trash out on the morning of garbage pickup with a secure lid, not the night before when bears roam for food!
