A quick update from LIEF: Thanks to an extraordinary show of community support and local island businesses, the $180,000 needed to save Lopez Island School athletics for the 2026-27 school year has now been pledged! The timing is perfect as the funds needed to be secured before the Lopez Island School Board meeting on May 27.

The “School Athletics 2026–27” fund on LIEF’s donation page will remain open through May 26 for those who still wish to support school athletics. Additional donations are welcomed and continue to make a difference: www.lopezeducation.org/donate

More information about this effort will be shared following the School Board’s May 27 meeting. Go Lobos!

The Lopez Island Education Foundation (LIEF) wholeheartedly supports the Lopez Island Park & Recreation District Proposition No. 1 - Levy and encourages voters to vote "YES!" on April 28.

The Lopez Rec levy will provide significant financial relief to the school by funding K-12 sports, as well as after school and summer programs that Lopez kids and working families rely on.

LIEF does not fund sports. LIEF supports the educational programs of our school: teacher grants that include week-long intensives, off-island field trips, testing, professional development, and curriculum materials and supplies. LIEF would like to support the school in restoring educational programs that have been cut but we’re not there yet.

LIEF raising $300,000 last year to cover the 2025-2026 academic year budget deficit for educational programming was a huge success and speaks to the generosity of our community. We need to be realistic about the extent of the budgetary challenges facing the school district and the limits of private fundraising.

The Lopez Rec levy is a vital part of that solution. Together, a funded Lopez Rec district and the continued support of LIEF will create a stronger, more balanced foundation for our school and the Lopez community.

Our school district needs BOTH: a funded Lopez Rec district AND the support that LIEF can provide. This is a Lopez levy for all and future Lopezians! Please vote “YES!” along with LIEF on April 28th!

Lopez, YOU DID IT! 🎉
Thanks to hundreds of acts of generosity, the Lopez Island Education Foundation(LIEF) has reached its $300,000 fundraising goal for the 2025–2026 school year — a milestone made possible by the Lopez community and everyone who cares about our beloved Lopez Island School.

Donations came in many forms, from bake sales to matching gifts and community donations. Island families, friends, neighbors, and supporters near and far came together to support our school. 💛

The LIEF Board would like to recognize a few special supporters we are deeply grateful for:
for running the Dine Out & Round Up campaign, which raised over $1,200 — the equivalent of funding an off-island field trip — while helping raise awareness about school funding challenges.
• Lopez artist Kristi Carpine-Taber, who generously donated artwork and notecards sold at Chimera Gallery, with proceeds benefitting Lopez students.
• A generous Lopez couple, whose Giving Tuesday match helped raise more than $15,000 in a single day.

Because of this collective effort, LIEF helped close the district’s immediate funding shortfall and preserved support for teacher grants for field trips, curriculum, and week-long intensives to enrich learning for island kids.

As we celebrate this important milestone, we also remain mindful that long-term funding challenges are not yet resolved. Until sustainable solutions are in place, LIEF anticipates that community fundraising at this scale will continue to play a vital role in supporting our school. We’ll keep working closely with school leadership and keeping the community informed as plans and needs become clearer.

Community schools need community support — and Lopez delivered big time. Thank you, Lopez. 💛
