Taproot, The Lopez Island Community Kitchen

Taproot, The Lopez Island Community Kitchen Taproot Kitchen is a shared-use commercial kitchen. Let us help you start a food business today!

Taproot Community Kitchen is a shared use commercial kitchen providing entrepreneurs and community members access to commercial grade food processing equipment. Sharing equipment and facilities permits small businesses to start up without the hindrance of individually purchasing everything needed to legally produce food for sale to the public. The Taproot Kitchen provides commercial grade equipment for locals to process their own food for year round nourishment.

Help us Support Food Makers and Producers!
During Give Lopez 2026, Taproot has a goal to raise $5,000 in funds to support the next generation of local food makers and entrepreneurs. With your help, we can strengthen our island’s economy, foster innovation, and empower community members to turn their recipes into thriving businesses.

Please take a moment to visit our Give Lopez fundraising page https://www.givelopez.org/story/xm6dmf to learn more about our services and read quotes from local farmers and food making businesses who we’ve helped. During this Give Lopez, let’s create a safe, efficient, and inspiring space where food entrepreneurs thrive — helping individuals take their recipes and make them a reality!

The Taproot Cook Room is officially open for business!

In February 2026 we received approval from San Juan County and our “Final Occupancy” status has been set as complete! We’re open for business! Check out the fire suppression test in the photo, we passed with flying colors (and balloons)!

Today -- Thursday, Jan. 15 from 1pm to 3pm the Lopez Locavores need help picking apples.

The Locavores have begun a new project making emergency meals for infants. Since most islanders only have two weeks worth of groceries at any time, there would be hardship during a long-term food shortage. It’s not difficult to imagine a crisis given our dependence on ferries for everything. Once the children are covered, we can focus on the Meals on Wheels folks and seniors.

Did you have excess fruit this year? Our goal is to freeze dry food that would otherwise be wasted. This food will last for 25 years in Mylar bags, saves 90+% of the nutrients and tastes really good!

If you would like to volunteer at Taproot for the freeze drying
of this food, please let me know. It takes 2 hours or less. This is
a doable project that may even save lives.

Susan Bill has offered her apples and we need volunteers this Thursday-1/15 from 1pm to 3pm.

The trees are espaliered, so easy picking. We may need sturdy boxes in case we don't have enough crates. Please let me know if you can come, or have questions.

Susan's address is:
744 Richardson Road (between Davis Bay Rd and the Grange)
