Today -- Thursday, Jan. 15 from 1pm to 3pm the Lopez Locavores need help picking apples.
The Locavores have begun a new project making emergency meals for infants. Since most islanders only have two weeks worth of groceries at any time, there would be hardship during a long-term food shortage. It’s not difficult to imagine a crisis given our dependence on ferries for everything. Once the children are covered, we can focus on the Meals on Wheels folks and seniors.
Did you have excess fruit this year? Our goal is to freeze dry food that would otherwise be wasted. This food will last for 25 years in Mylar bags, saves 90+% of the nutrients and tastes really good!
If you would like to volunteer at Taproot for the freeze drying
of this food, please let me know. It takes 2 hours or less. This is
a doable project that may even save lives.
Susan Bill has offered her apples and we need volunteers this Thursday-1/15 from 1pm to 3pm.
The trees are espaliered, so easy picking. We may need sturdy boxes in case we don't have enough crates. Please let me know if you can come, or have questions.
Susan's address is:
744 Richardson Road (between Davis Bay Rd and the Grange)
