The water project at the Olemoncho School gets the green light!
Just as the pandemic took hold in the U.S. in March, the KSP board approved funding for the water project. The timing could not have been more critical. The Olemoncho School, located in the Masai Mara and serving 350 students, currently has no running water on campus. All school water needs—for drinking, irrigating the food program’s vegetable garden, and general hygiene for students and teachers—comes from a spring a mile away. The burden of carrying water the mile from the spring to the school, in two-gallon jugs, falls mostly to female students (the traditional Maasai manner). Limited access to water at the school results in a lack of hygiene, especially concerning now.
Students will be returning to school in two months and by then, due to our generous donor, the school will have running water. When informed of the funding for the project, school board representative Duncan Nkoitoi said, “This is the right time to do the project as water is an essential item for COVID-19 prevention. Hand washing! Hand washing! I am excited that during this hard time you were able to raise the money. God bless you. This shows the love and commitment you have for our community.”
