September is Absentee Month.
Chronic absenteeism affects more than 14 million students in the U.S., with numbers having surged since the pandemic. That's one in three students missing more than 10% of the school year.
Research has shown that when students are chronically absent, they are less likely to achieve academic success and graduate from high school, exacerbating learning gaps and impacting social development.
Schools depend on community collaboration to overcome systemic barriers to attendance and engagement, and effective mentoring relationships are key to ensuring this effort succeeds.
Research shows that students greatly benefit from connecting with a mentor invested in helping them achieve their personal and academic goals.
