The war through Wilfred Burchett

In November 1963, Wilfred Burchett an Australian journalist, spent six months in southern Vietnam with National Liberation Front guerrillas, staying in their fortified hamlets, living day to day, and traveling underground in their network of narrow tunnels.

Burchett spent many of the early years with the NLF conducting interviews, taking photos, and making reports of the conflict from the “the other side”. Already being a seasoned journalist from his time covering events in Burma, Japan, China, and Korea over the last 20 years.

Here are some of his photos from his time spent during the early years in South Vietnam, embedded with the National Liberation Front.

If you haven’t heard of Mr. Burchett before I definitely recommend reading more about him. His converge of the war as well as how his story he documented spans basically the whole conflict.

National Liberation Front rural Tax collector stamp

This stamp was captured together along with the belt pouch, I was told it was found in a three cell ruck on the outside of a village as the Veterans unit was pushing in.

These stamps have been found in many different styles but mainly all made from wood and carved in a similar fashion. Used by Tax collectors who were procuring goods for the resistance, mainly food provisions, such as, rice and sugar. After the goods were handed over, they would stamp a provided booklet showing the farmer or shop keeper has paid up for the war effort. It’s been known this wasn’t voluntary all of the time.

The bag itself is getting to be a harder item to find. I have a few of these but this is my only tan one. They were common to find holding rice bowls, canteens, and in this case, a tax stamp.

These fabric portraits were fairly common bring backs found in rucks and camps. There’s a few different styles of them all being one sided with two of the more common styles found show here. They were printed or weaved on rayon and silk fabric then given as gifts back home.

Here is an old photo of one from my collection before it was framed.

Probably one of the coolest tire ashtrays I’ve seen.
The center is made up of milled steel with a Vietnamese made non-directional tire.

Most photos are from Da Nang 1967-68. Including a kids size camo uniform top sporting a Vietnam rocker to send home from a local Da Nang tailor shop.
