Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 12, 1922, in Indianapolis, Indiana, by seven young educators: Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades Martin, and Cubena McClure. The group became an incorporated national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, whe
n a charter was granted to the Alpha chapter at Butler University. Chapter History
The "Astonishing" Alpha Gamma Sigma chapter was chartered in March 1941 in Longview, TX by seven illustrious women: Soror Mary Carter (Southwestern Regional Syntaktes), Soror Willia Higler, Soror Isaiah Murphy, Soror Lonnie Quick, Soror Marion Tillis, Soror Zephur Brown, and Soror Isannah Bell. The graduate chapter advises two undergraduate chapters in the East Texas area. They are the Kappa Upsilon chapter at Jarvis Christian University, advised by Soror Jessica Sibley-Anderson, and the Beta Kappa chapter at Texas College, advised by Soror DeLaNesha Cole. The chapter has an active Rhoer and Philo club. Past Chapter Basileli include Soror Lonnie Quick, Soror Isannah Bell, Soror Narva Snoddy, Soror Fannie Willis, Soror Ira Johnson, Soror Rose Evans, Soror Carmenia Anderson, Soror Willia Hagler, Soror Lucille Clark, Soror Janel Hewitt, and Elizabeth Smith.
