Inheriting the house doesn’t always mean inheriting clear title.

“So many individuals have inherited mom’s or auntie’s or grandma’s house, but on the legal side that title never changed hands.”

This is one of those housing issues that many families don’t realize exists until they need help.

A home may have been in the family for years, but if the legal paperwork was never updated, that can create real challenges when it comes to preserving the home, making repairs, or accessing certain types of assistance. As LaJuan shared in the interview, families often believe the home is theirs, but the legal side may tell a different story.

That’s why conversations around estate planning, title issues, and generational homeownership matter so much. Safe and stable housing is not just about getting into a home. It’s also about making sure a family can protect it, keep it, and pass it on.

At Northeast Texas Habitat for Humanity, we believe housing education is a critical part of building stronger families and stronger communities.

BEFORE/AFTER - Critical home repairs story!💙

She had been living with the risk of falling — and unable to use the bathroom she needed.

After surgery in 2015 left Ms. Budnick on disability and requiring oxygen around the clock, necessary repairs to her home became increasingly difficult to manage. Worn carpet created a tripping hazard, unsanitary conditions raised concerns for her respiratory health, and a leak in her master bathroom shower meant she could not safely use the bathroom best equipped for her needs.

Through our Home Repair Program, we stepped in to help create a safer and more comfortable home.

Her project included:

✓ Replacing carpet in the living room, hallway, and master bedroom with vinyl flooring
✓ Replacing the leaking master bathroom shower so she could safely use it again
✓ Inspecting the electrical box for potential safety concerns
✓ Checking the front and back doors for needed repairs
✓ Repairing a damaged area of the exterior soffit

For Ms. Budnick, these repairs are about more than improving a house. They are about being able to move through her home with greater safety, breathe easier, and continue living with the comfort and dignity everyone deserves.

Because home should never be a place where someone has to choose between safety and independence.💚💙
