Save Recess and Lunch in Longview School District

Save Recess and Lunch in Longview School District This time is crucial to our children's development and well-being. A rushed lunch period will create empty bellies, stress, and excessive food waste.

As concerned parents and community members, we are deeply troubled by the reduction of recess time Dr. Dan Zorn and the Longview School District Administration is implementing in the 2023-2024 school year without formal approval or public notice. We know that recess is an essential part of a child's education and development, providing much-needed physical activity, socialization opportunities, an

d invaluable brain boosting benefits. Research has shown that regular physical activity is critical for children's health and well-being. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children should get at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day. However, many kids are not meeting this recommendation due to factors such as lack of access to safe outdoor spaces, screen time, and sedentary lifestyles. Furthermore, Washington State law mandates an average of 100 minutes of Physical Education per week. LVSD elementary students currently receive 80 minutes; 20 minutes short of state requirements. Recess provides a valuable opportunity for kids to be active and recharge throughout the school day. In fact, studies have found recess boosts cognitive function and reduces stress, which in turn leads to children achieving higher academic outcomes. Additionally, research has shown children who receive more recess minutes at school tend to be more physically active overall than those who have less or no recess. Shortening lunch to 20 minutes does not provide a sufficient amount of time for our students to complete their meals and build healthy eating habits. We urge Longview School District officials not to reduce recess and lunch time in our schools, and to prioritize student health and well-being. Please sign this petition today if you agree that our children deserve adequate recess and lunch time! *You may opt to have your name hidden from public view. https://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/physicalactivity/guidelines.htm

Reminder: School Board meeting Monday August 14th, 6:30pm @ 2715 Lilac Street.

Dr. Zorn will be announcing the changes to this years elementary schedule, which includes moving breakfast to before school hours, moving meals out of the classroom and in to gymnasiums, reducing lunch time from 30 to 20 minutes, reducing the lunch recess from 30 to 15 minutes, and adding a third 15 minute recess to the end of the day (essentially cutting the previous 30 minute lunch recess into two 15 minute recesses).
How do you feel about these changes?
Do you believe these changes will benefit not only our students, but teachers, paraeducators, custodians, bus drivers, and all other support staff as well?
If a student needs more than 20 minutes to eat, should they miss recess or class time?
As parents and gaurdians, have you received proper notice of these changes and are you prepared and able (if needed) to get your children to school earlier for breakfast?

‼️Say NO to reduced recess and lunch time in Longview schools‼️

LSVD has been providing our elementary students just two recess breaks per day totaling 45 minutes, and a 30 minute lunch period (a third 15 minute recess break was eliminated years ago). Starting this next school year they will be reducing time to 35 minutes of recess per day, and a 20 minute lunch period.

In pictures is a snapshot of results from the study “Effect of Recess on Fifth Grade Students’ Time On-task in an Elementary Classroom” published by the International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education that establishes evidence to further prove time on-task increases after recess and physical activity.
Longview School District should be looking into supplying our students with MORE recess and physical activity (not taking away from the little time they have) if their mission is to raise academic achievement levels. Furthermore, 20 minutes of lunch time is not enough to finish meals and build healthy eating habits. These are children as young as five years old. This limited time will create empty bellies, stress, disordered eating, and excessive food waste.

The most impactful thing you can do is email District Administrators and Board Members directly with your concerns - they need to hear directly from the people they serve! Even a quick note can make a difference!

It is also crucial for LVSD to come into compliance with Washington State law WAC 392-410-135 / RCW 28A.230.040 and provide our students the required average of 100 minutes of Physical Education per week (currently LVSD provides 80 minutes per week and recess does NOT count as Physical Education time)

‼️Say NO to reduced recess and lunch time in Longview schools‼️

Longview School District Administration has decided to cut recess and lunch time in our elementary schools beginning in the 2023-24 school year in an attempt to raise State Standardized Testing scores by increasing the amount of time our children are in chairs. Visit our page for more information.

Countless studies and publications point to the benefits and rewards of MORE recess time, both academically and personally. Our children also deserve an adequate amount of time to finish their meals and build healthy eating habits.

Please share this information with your family and friends - many members in our community are unaware of these upcoming changes as LVSD has made no announcement to our parents though school communications or public notice, and this decision is not being brought to our School Board for formal approval.

‼️Did you know‼️ Longview School District Administration is cutting recess and lunch time in all elementary schools for the upcoming school year? LVSD has declared this an administrative decision that will not go to the Board for formal approval, meaning parents and community members will not receive proper representation from the officials we elected to stand for our students and families best interests. The Board has so far failed to insert themselves into this decision, neglecting their duties to determine the allocation of instructional hours and staff time (RCW 28A.150.230).

It is appalling that an educational service district is making so many uneducated decisions, and ignoring the reasearch that proves MORE recess opportunities lead to higher acedemic achievement. Our students also deserve adequate time to finish their meals and build healthy eating habits. Rushed lunch periods will create empty bellies, disordered eating, stress, and excessive food waste.

Please share - many families are unaware of the changes!
