Meals on Wheels provides nutritious meals to seniors who are unable to leave their homes, typically due to physical or medical limitations. Here are some ways in which Meals on Wheels is important for seniors:

Nutritious meals: Many seniors have difficulty preparing meals or accessing healthy food options. Meals on Wheels provides nutritious meals that meet dietary needs and help seniors maintain their health and well-being.

Social interaction: The volunteers who deliver Meals on Wheels often provide a friendly face and conversation, which can be a valuable source of social interaction for seniors who may be isolated or lonely.

Safety check: The volunteers who deliver the meals also serve as a safety check, as they can report any concerns about the senior's health or well-being to the appropriate authorities.

Independence: By providing nutritious meals, Meals on Wheels allows seniors to remain independent and living in their own homes for as long as possible.

Cost-effective: Meals on Wheels is a cost-effective solution compared to other options, such as assisted living or nursing homes, which can be more expensive.

Today we share B's story. B tells us,
"I'm 91 years old and the meals help me a lot, they keep me alive. I eat fruit and vegetables every day because of the meals and I wouldn’t otherwise. I feel safer in my home knowing someone is coming to deliver my meals and checking up on me. They are good cooks!"

Without CAP's Meals on Wheels volunteers, people like B wouldn't be able to achieve proper nutrition while living alone. In 2022, CAP volunteers served over 3,000 hours supporting local seniors!

L is an 88-year-old woman living in Kelso. L is wheelchair-bound and cannot stand or walk. When asked about the impact Meals on Wheels has made for her, L shares "I simply can't safely get into the kitchen to cook anything much. I wouldn't be buying fruits and vegetables much if I had to buy them myself. I enjoy the volunteers, I get to talk to them and it means a lot to me to have that visit. It does something for me to have them come into my home to see me and that they are concerned."

If you can, please consider donating so CAP can continue to provide healthy meals and social supports to people like our friend, L.

Today's Meals on Wheels story is about J, an 85-year-old Longview woman who is low-income and disabled. "Because of arthritis and other conditions, I can't cook or handle hot pots/pans of food anymore. Without Meals on Wheels, I would be eating food cold right out of the cans, that is if I could afford to buy canned foods. These delivered meals are spot on for helping me manage my diabetes. The meals are designed to provide good nutrition and still be yummy to eat. With them, I get the right amounts of fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Even though I live in a 30-unit apartment building, I go days and days without seeing anyone other than the angels who deliver my meals. It comforts me to know someone checks on me each day. Without Meals on Wheels I would need to become dependent on tax payers to have me in a care center."

We're so thankful to have a program like Meals on Wheels to help people like J, and thankful to everyone who supports this program through donations and volunteering.
