ANNOUNCEMENT

08/19/2026

Hey GLSA Family!

Player safety is always our top priority. Starting today at 4:00 PM, we will be checking the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT). Practice cancellations for the day will be made based on those readings and current temperatures to keep our kids safe in the heat.

Thank you for your understanding and support as we keep our players safe! Please remember to send plenty of water with your athletes.

Dear Families and Coaches,

In accordance with Texas heat safety protocols and U.S. Soccer’s Recognize to Recover guidelines, player safety is our organization's highest priority.

Texas falls into high-risk heat regions under national athletic safety standards, where extreme environmental conditions can quickly create dangerous training environments. Today's WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) readings have reached levels that exceed safe outdoor training thresholds.
Recognize to Recover

Unlike standard temperature, WBGT factors in ambient heat, humidity, wind speed, and direct solar radiation—giving an accurate measure of environmental stress on young athletes. Under U.S. Soccer and regional athletic guidelines, outdoor training must be suspended or canceled when WBGT reaches these extreme levels.

Indoor Practice: We strongly recommend moving all team practices indoors.

Outdoor Practice: If indoor facility space is unavailable for your team, outdoor practices must be canceled today. No outdoor training sessions should take place under these conditions.
Coaches will reach out directly to their respective teams with this information.

Thank you for your cooperation as we work together to keep our athletes safe and healthy.
Stay cool and stay hydrated! 🥤🧊

At the Greater Longview Soccer Association (GLSA), the safety of our players, coaches, and families is always our top priority. Extreme heat is a real risk in East Texas, but heat-related illnesses are completely preventable when we take the right precautions.

Young athletes absorb heat faster and don't sweat as efficiently as adults. When temperatures soar on the pitch, heat exhaustion can happen quickly—affecting not just players on the field, but also coaches and spectators on the sidelines.

A standard thermometer or basic Heat Index only measures air temperature in the shade. At GLSA, we follow Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) guidelines—the official safety standard backed by U.S. Soccer and Texas athletic organizations:
UIL

Direct Sun & Humidity: WBGT accounts for direct sunlight, humidity, air temperature, and wind speed right on the field. UIL Real Body Impact: It measures how efficiently sweat can actually evaporate off an athlete's skin to cool them down.

When the WBGT reading reaches specific thresholds, we automatically adjust activities:

Mandatory Water Breaks: Frequent rest periods in shaded areas. Shortened Sessions: Reduced practice times and lower training intensity. Postponements or Cancellations: Halting outdoor sessions entirely when safety thresholds are breached.
