Sometimes, an ordinary phone call turns into a moment a child will remember forever. ❤️
While we’re working toward opening Isaiah 117 House Horry County, we’re still finding ways to serve children right here in our community. And sometimes, that looks like a birthday party in a DSS conference room.
One day, a child who had spent most of the week waiting for placement asked his caseworker, “If I’m still here tomorrow, will you remember it’s my birthday?”
The answer was yes. His caseworker called us, and with the help of our generous community, we gathered gifts, decorations, Crumbl cookies, ice cream, and everything needed to celebrate.
The next day, a conference room became a birthday party. Several caseworkers stopped by between their other responsibilities to watch him open presents, and some even brought gifts of their own. After wiping his happy tears, he smiled and said, “This is the best birthday I’ve ever had.”
Y’all, this is why we do what we do.
Until our house opens, caseworkers will continue caring for children in the middle of meetings, visits, and countless other responsibilities. They showed up for this child, and we want to keep showing up for them, too. That’s why we bring treats to DSS each month through our DSS Appreciation Days.
We’re getting closer to our next chapter, and events like Socktober, Sips of the Season, and our other community events help us raise the awareness and support needed to get there. But they also help us say yes to opportunities to serve right now, while we prepare to build a house.
Because one day, birthday parties like this won’t have to fit into a half hour in a conference room. They can last as long as a child needs, in the comfort of an Isaiah 117 House, where they can take a breath, feel safe, and simply be a kid.
