We were honored to welcome Boulder Mayor Aaron Brockett (Aaron Brockett, Boulder Mayor) and Rachel Friend () to Good Life Refuge. It was a joy to introduce them to our animal residents and share the stories that make this sanctuary so special.

We especially appreciated their openness, thoughtful questions, and willingness to listen as we discussed both the opportunities and challenges facing animal sanctuaries in Boulder County. Meaningful conversations like these help build understanding, connection, and a more compassionate future for animals and our community. πŸ’šπŸ·πŸ„πŸ”

πŸŒŽπŸ’š This World Environment Day, our choices matter more than ever.

What we eat has a direct impact on the planet we all share. Research continues to show that plant-based diets require fewer natural resources and produce significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions than diets centered around animal products. 🌱

πŸ„ Cattle and other ruminant animals produce methane during digestion β€” a greenhouse gas far more powerful than carbon dioxide in trapping heat in the atmosphere. The United Nations and FAO identify livestock as a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions.

πŸ’§ Animal agriculture is also incredibly water intensive. Producing just one pound of beef can require around 1,800 gallons of water, while plant foods like beans, grains, and vegetables generally use far less water and land.

🌿 Studies show that shifting toward plant-based eating can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, water use, land use, pollution, and habitat destruction. Even small changes β€” like choosing more plant-based meals each week β€” can help protect forests, wildlife, rivers, and our climate.

Protecting the Earth and protecting animals go hand in hand.
Compassion is environmental action. πŸŒŽπŸ–πŸ„πŸ“

Please welcome this beautiful duck to the Good Life Refuge family. πŸ’›

She/he was found abandoned in Pueblo and, thanks to a kind Good Samaritan, made the journey to safety with us.

Unfortunately, this is something we see every year. As spring chicks and ducklings grow into adults, many birds lose the novelty that made them appealing in the first place. Some people discover that caring for ducks requires more time, space, and commitment than expected. Others learn that the chick they hoped was a hen is actually a roosterβ€”a common occurrence, as sexing young chicks is not always accurate.

As a result, countless ducks, chickens, and especially roosters are abandoned, surrendered, or left with nowhere to go.

Animal sanctuaries across the country are struggling to keep up with the growing number of unwanted birds. Before bringing home chicks or ducklings, it's important to consider their lifelong needs and have a plan for their careβ€”even if they don't turn out to be what you expected.

For today, we're grateful this little duck is safe, cared for, and has a second chance. Welcome home. πŸ¦†β€οΈ

Meet Phyllis. πŸ’›
This tiny Sebright bantam hen was recently found all alone in an alley in Denver. Frightened and unsure of the world around her, she now has a safe place to land at Good Life Refuge.
Despite her small size, Phyllis has already captured our hearts with her beautiful feathers, gentle spirit, and quiet determination. We're giving her all the time she needs to settle in, feel safe, and discover that she never has to face the world alone again.
Welcome home, little Phyllis. πŸ”βœ¨

Love doesn't need words. πŸ’›

A gentle lick, a trusted friend, a quiet moment of connectionβ€”Teddy and Rosalina remind us that love, comfort, and companionship are not uniquely human. They are universal.

When we take the time to notice, animals show us every day that they form deep bonds and care for one another in ways that feel beautifully familiar.

Sweet Shawn has been through so much already. πŸ’”

Our boy Shawn has been battling severe arthritis and laminitis, requiring ongoing care, pain management, and close monitoring to keep him comfortable and mobile. Now, on top of everything else, Shawn is also dealing with painful dental issues and will need dental surgery.

The CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital field service was back out at the sanctuary again to assess Shawn, and we are currently waiting for the estimate for his upcoming dental procedure and care.

Animals like Shawn remind us how important sanctuary is for aging and medically complex animals. His care is intensive, but he is deeply loved and deserves every chance at comfort and quality of life.

If you would like to help support Shawn’s veterinary care, donations of any size truly make a difference for animals like him. ❀️

It was shearing day for the alpacas! βœ‚οΈπŸ¦™

While alpacas may look extra fluffy and adorable, their thick fiber can become very uncomfortable as temperatures rise. Annual shearing helps keep them cool, healthy, and comfortable through the warmer months.

Our alpacas handled their spa day like champs, and we’re always grateful for the gentle hands and caring support that make days like this possible.

After a fresh shear, they’re usually feeling lighter, cooler, and ready to zoom around the pasture again. πŸ’›
