Sometimes DSR’s role is simply to refer our current adoption applicants to other rescue groups and shelters when they have a Sammy available. We are thrilled for Sasha finding her new home and thankful to The Dog Ranch Rescue for helping this sweet Samoyed/Eskie girl!

DSR received this wonderful update on one our dogs: “Yukon is now an old man (13.5 years old), but he is still large and in charge and the center of attention and a great ambassador for all Sams. He meets and greets hundreds of people each day here in Breckenridge, and gets many ooohs and aaaahs.”

Of course he does! He is a magnificent boy!

DSR first met Yukon in 2008, when he came to us at 1 year of age. We pulled him from a Newton, KS shelter. He was adopted shortly after, but sadly his first adopter passed away and he was returned to DSR, but along with a 10 year old Samoyed brother named Teton! Both boys were adopted in 2013 by an incredible couple. Teton passed away on 2016, but Yukon is still enjoying splitting time between his two homes in Florida and Colorado.

So happy for you Yukon!!

Max and Polar were adopted in 2018 and are now living a life, with their amazing brother Boeing, that they could only have imagined a year and half ago.

They were part of the Iowa puppy mill rescue. As the majority the dogs that came from that tragic circumstance, they were extremely timid, afraid of loud noises and new spaces. Because of the devotion of their adopters and Boeing, they are now boisterous and adventurous! They love to go own walks, and beg for treats from the neighbors! Ironically, their groomer and veterinarian both own Samoyeds! How cool is that!

Their success story speaks to the resilience of these amazing dogs and gives renewed faith in humanity.

Good boys!! 🐾🤍🧡🤍🐾

Tyka, adopted in 2019, is living the best Colorado life possible!

Tyka came to DSR as a result of her elderly owner's passing. She was a heavyweight champion at 82 pounds. Her new family immediately started her on her new exercise regime, including lots of walks in the neighborhood, plus hiking and swimming in the Colorado mountains! She is now a much healthier girl after losing 25 pounds!

We so appreciate these updates from our rescue families! More more!

Our deepest sympathies to Tessa’s family. Adopted in May 2006 at 1 year of age, and crossed Rainbow Bridge in July 2020. A life well-lived, and well-loved and adored by your devoted family. We are so grateful to them, giving you the second chance you so deserved.

We look back on these pictures from the time you first were adopted in 2006, to participating in our “Pictures with Santa Claws” fundraisers, having fun at our DSR picnic in 2008 and enjoying being in your loving home. Oh where does the time go? Gentle journey sweet girl.

Protect those Paws
With a weather forecast calling for highs in the upper 90s for the next few weeks, it's more important than ever to pay a little extra attention to your pets paws and the damage that can be done by the hot summer pavement. Before you turn your pet loose, check the temperature by placing your palm down on the surface – if it feels hot to the touch, wait for a cooler time of day to take a walk (and watch out for hot boat decks, sand, and packed soil).

Despite all the rough-and-tumble, your pet’s paw pads are quite sensitive and subject to the risk of injury, including:
Hot surfaces such as asphalt, concrete, decks, and packed earth
Glass, metal, and other debris
Thorns and stick fragments
Burrs and foxtails
Parasites – like ticks – that can attach between the toes

Because we spend more time outdoors during the summer months, particularly for outdoor recreation, paying close attention to your pet’s well being while enjoying Mother Nature is an essential part of summer pet safety. Just as you might tend to your pet’s other grooming and health needs, paw care is easy to integrate into your daily care routine.

Some of the ways you can keep those furry feet happy include:
Inspect your pet’s paws at the end of each day or after returning from a natural area (check carefully between the toes, as well as the general condition of the paws).
Avoid areas where there’s broken glass or other debris, like fishing line, lures, and trash.
Maintain wellness appointments and parasite control.
Avoid areas that are overgrown, where it’s difficult to see where your pet is stepping.
Elect to walk or play on grass with your pet whenever possible.
Use a moisturizing paw balm formulated for pets (never use human grade lotion).

If you notice any injuries, inflammation, or burns on your pet’s paw pads, please contact our team. Your pet’s good health depends on strong, healthy paws!
