The USIP, the Institute of Peace, was closed, and the last of its administrators evicted, by the DC police.
USIP was created, in 1984, by a bi-partisan congressional act, and signed into being, by President Reagan. A sign of its importance, was its rather, large headquarters situated close to State Department headquarters.
The Institute researched radically unique paths of conflict negotiation, based on earlier work by Gerard Nierenberg, acquiring a reputation for groundbreaking methodology at resolving age old contentions. It was no surprise, that USIP helped lay the groundwork, with George Mitchell, that led to the Good Friday Agreement, bringing an end to a century of violence between Irish factions.
