The Backwoods is a nonprofit community space rooted in opportunity. Offerings change throughout the year, where not every season may look the same.

We make room for ideas, art, craft, land-based work, and community-led efforts as capacity allows. THE IDEA in short: local art and crafts gallery, fresh local produce and foodstuffs, Art Experimentation Center for sharing and learning, and Visitors' Center full of local information. We could be on our way to foster a sustainable future for our mountain community. The Backwoods would like to creat

e a co-op like setting; a community area sharing our talents. MORE on the idea:

EVERYONE living in the mountain communities are welcome to participate! You may never have to worry about a "real" job, or spending the extra time, money, and risk commuting to town for necessities ever again! A note from The Backwoods 🤍

Our brick-and-mortar space is not currently open for regular hours. We do not have a shoppekeeper or consistent staffing at this time.

The Backwoods has always been a place for opportunity. If you have an idea—a project, event, pop-up, small sale, or something you’d like to try—and it fits alongside what’s already here, this space may be available for you to work it out for a season or a day.

In the meantime, there are still ways to support local art and the mission of The Backwoods through our online Community Shoppe:

🌱This spring weather has us excited and we are making grand moves!! 🌞We are bringing back our Springtime Sale, but this year we are hosting outdoor sales EVERY WEEKEND IN APRIL! Bring your secondhand items, bring your homemade goods, bring your art, bring your plant starts 🌸 FREE SELLER SET UP!
Bring your tables and tents if you need them or just lay your stuff out. All vendors are responsible for removing their items after each weekend 💗

Does anyone know this little white truck? This is the second time our chickens have been stolen this year. Our chickens are typically donated or rescued and give back by offering their companion services and egg production to our community members.

If you are hungry, our community nonprofit has a variety of foods we share for free, canned, boxed, and fresh when available. If our resources are not enough for you, the Oconee County mobile food pantry visits the fire department on Saturdays from 11:30am-12:30pm.
If you need chickens, we have the ability to hatch chicks and usually hatch chicks late winter. (Well, now we’re missing a main component… but we could have helped you out)
If you need the money, I also have jobs available; part time, project based, and work/trade.
Moral of the story- there’s a solution for every problem. If the first solutions don’t work, there are backups. Please message me if you need help. We all need help. You’re not alone and there is no shame. Confidentiality is at the top of my priorities regardless. Our community use to stand together to help each other. We have grown A LOT especially in the last 5+ years, but there’s still a bunch who represent that. I hope you’ll join us.
