As we celebrate 8 years this Thanksgiving since the inception of Domes for Humanity, my heart is filled with deep gratitude.

To every donor whose generosity has fueled our mission…
To every volunteer who has traveled with us, spread the word, lifted heavy loads, and stepped into disaster zones with compassion and courage…
To every partner and organization who has stood beside us, proving that strategic partnerships are what make real impact possible…
And to every community we’ve served through storms, hurricanes, earthquakes, and rebuilding…
Thank you. You are the heartbeat behind every life we’ve touched.

Our mission has always been rooted in the belief that a house is not just a home — it’s where your story begins. Through every project and every deployment, we’ve committed to creating strong foundations, literally and figuratively, for generations to come.

Our work is, and always has been, about people helping people. Showing up with love, resilience, and hope when it’s needed most. That spirit continues to guide every step of our mission.

As Founder & Executive Director, I’m profoundly grateful for the support that has carried us these 8 years, and I’m equally excited for the greater vision unfolding ahead. The next chapter holds more opportunity, more healing spaces, and more lives we can impact through resilient, sustainable architecture.

Since 1980, we’ve endured $2.78 trillion in weather-related damages across the US (not including the recent Milton and Helene disasters)

Not million.
Not billion.
Trillion.

This isn’t just about numbers - it’s about a fundamental shift in how we need to think about our homes, our safety, and our future.

While traditional structures can withstand winds of 120-150 mph, dome homes are engineered for speeds up to 300 mph - beyond the force of the strongest recorded tornado.

They’re designed to deflect rather than resist, to work with nature rather than against it.

When Hurricane Michael made landfall in 2018 as a Category 5 storm with 160 mph winds, it caused $25 billion in damages.

Yet these structures are built to withstand nearly twice that force - along with resistance to fire and rot/mold.

The data shows us disasters are becoming more frequent, more intense, and more costly.

The solution isn’t to build stronger versions of the same vulnerable designs - it’s to reimagine what’s possible.

As we face a future where “once-in-a-lifetime” storms are becoming annual events, perhaps it’s time to acknowledge that the homes of tomorrow shouldn’t look like the homes of yesterday.

The question isn’t if we need to adapt, but when.

The numbers are telling us that time is now.

Our second volunteer day post Hurricane Milton, was assisting in flood recovery from Hurricane Helene (it’s crazy writing that sentence!)

Floodwaters eventually recede, but they leave behind tough choice people must make.

Heirloom armchairs, children’s favorite toys, photo albums - the instinct is to save them - but nearly everything has got to go.

The contamination from these floodwaters means furniture can become a health hazard, with even wood and electronics becoming a hidden danger.

The mold that can occur within 48 hours poses serious health threats, and it’s super swift in setting in.

The mold in the images pictured had the chance to take hold because *fortunately* the elderly owner of the property wasn’t home when it flooded, but they also weren’t home in the days following.

It’s a heartbreaking process, sorting through waterlogged items, deciding what has to go - and it situations like these, it’s nearly everything.

In our work to rebuild communities and housing after disasters like this, we see furniture stacked high on the sides of roads far too often - it’s why we are committed to creating resilient structures that can better withstand future floods.

Because if one thing is clear, there will be future floods - but if anything else is even more certain, it’s that the spirit and resiliency of Floridians can’t be broken.

Gulf-bound today to assist in Hurricane Helene/Milton recovery.

Started in Bradenton; directed by the Rotary to a family whose month-old roof took a hit by one of the many fallen trees in the area.

We worked with them to remove it, so the roof could be tarped while it awaits repair.

A massive amount of tree removal is ongoing at the moment, due to the high winds and tornados, as well as moving flood damaged furniture into roadside.

Had an unexpected encounter with a chicken in Siesta Key on our recon drive - had to stop and feed said chicken amongst the chaos!

The road to recovery is long, but many hands make light work. As we progress through the phases of recovery, and onto rebuilding, the pressing need for storm resilient housing is unmistakable.

🌪️ Creating this thread here for anyone affected by Hurricane Milton:

Domes for Humanity be in SW FL this weekend with our emergency relief partner orgs and if any help is needed i.e. SAR (search and rescue), food, emergency relief kits, homes non-habitable and need shelter, mucking, clean-up, etc we are here to help.

Landfall hasn’t happened yet, and to put it into perspective, my brother’s window just blew in Sarasota and they are about 8.6 miles East of Siesta Key. They are fine and taking shelter. Prayers all around, especially for all the tornadoes happening as well 🙏🏼

🚨Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts🚨

Thank you to everyone who has personally reached out to volunteer your resources and skills in affected FL communities. Whether you’ve volunteered with us in past disaster relief efforts or ready to serve for this one, the aftermath of this hurricane is unfathomable and so much help is needed for survivors.

We have arranged the first trip out to SW FL for volunteers from October 10-13th to support communities alongside Rotary District 6960. The Disaster Relief Team has 4 active volunteer sites established in these locations:

•Anna Maria Island - Cortez
•Sanibel Island
•Englewood
•Siesta Key

We will provide additional specific details/lodging for registered volunteers for any or all dates, as there are curfews in place. Please email us to join:

[If you are already in close proximity to these sites, there is ongoing help needed daily starting at 9am, from physical labor/debris cleanup to providing housing/rooms, to arranging food delivery/donation distribution]

We’ve been asked if kids can join and yes, with parent or legal guardian, selfless service especially at a young age is encouraged.

Your support will mean the world to those impacted by this hurricane. We will have ongoing trips as needed. It’s in these times when we see the power and strength of communities coming together ♥️

🚨Prayers going out to North FL family and friends, and many others who will be affected by as the eye continues to draw near, and devastating damage is predicted ⛈️

🙏With disaster response underway from partners on the ground, we are waiting to see how we can help.

🚨Domes for Humanity is a long-term disaster relief organization, but we do not overlook the emergency relief needed when disaster hits hard. We have partnered many times over 6 years in past natural disasters with organizations that excel in emergency relief.

👉 There is immediate need for volunteers at HQ in Doral to pack aid to distribute to victims, and monetary donations.

🤝As always, we’re here to create awareness + smart partnerships for building safe, permanent shelter and affordable housing to address many root issues in disaster recovery that we can avoid together. Reach out for any need as this storm continues to form…
