The Garden Club of Long Valley

The Garden Club of Long Valley We encourage interest in civic beautification, gardening in our community & the art of horticulture. Despite our small club status, we are very active!

The Garden Club of Long Valley is classified as a small club by GCNJ with our membership set at 45 members. We also have a very active Youth Group, "The Sprouts of Long Valley". Many of our programs, workshops and events focus on gardening in our community, encouraging civic beautification and the study and teach of the fine art of horticulture throughout our calendar year. We were privileged to

participate in a joint project with Rutgers and the Raritan Highlands Compact to install a rain garden at the Washington Township Public Library. We participate in the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Zion Lutheran Church every December. We also plan, plant and maintain municipal gardens throughout Long Valley all year long. Our programs, workshops and special events throughout the year provide our members with educational forums for discussion. We share our talents with our community in a number of ways including our Garden Therapy Committee’s work in spreading cheer to our town’s seniors, and with our May Day flower baskets delivered to families with members in our armed forces. We work with our Historical Society to provide wreaths for their annual House Tour. We also find time for trips to such places as Wave Hill in New York, Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, and the Philadelphia and New Jersey Flower Shows. We are proud of our talents and prize the work we do in our community.

Every once in a while....

Ever forget something you planted in the garden and then it pops up - like a friend you haven't talked to in a while. Such is the case of my tuberose, which was donated to club members several years ago. Planted, transplanted, (forgotten) and now in bloom.

Sand Sculptures

in honor of the 250th year of independence Americana is the theme this year at Peddler's Village annual sand sculpture exhibition. There is a notable trend of fewer exhibits whether it be scarecrows, gingerbread displays and now sadly the sand sculptures. Always grateful for the thoughtful creativity and time one spends in sharing their artistry whether professional or not.

DEADHEAD

It is a highly recommended practice to deadhead your peonies after the petals have faded and dropped but before the green pod swells. Deadheading helps to redirect the plant's energy away from seed production to root development. Do not cut back the main foliage. Wait until late fall just after the first hard frost to cut back the entire plant 2-3 inches above the ground.

Two Chester high schoolers are offering a summer camp for kids in grades 3-5 called 'Project Pollination' where kids can learn about and take part in the creation of a pollinator garden here in town. This project is funded by the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions (ANJEC). See flyer for details:

Strawberries

Growing up in California the first two weeks of June meant strawberries. Strawberries the size of baseballs and Marie Calendar strawberry pies piled high with strawberries, strawberry shortcake with fresh whipped cream and if we were lucky, homemade strawberry ice cream with chunks of strawberry. Sigh.
