Earth Month may be over, but our work continues.
At our non-profit, we have been championing ways to live more sustainably, and making them accessible to *all* New Yorkers.
In 2014, we started to develop solar programs, through our ☀️ Here Comes Solar pillar, which made solar affordable and accessible for our city. Since then, the industry has grown exponentially, and has remained resilient through the ups and downs of our current climate. *no pun intended*
When Superstorm Sandy affected our neighbors around Stuyvesant Cove Park, we had already built "The Shack" that became a hub for our community and a symbol of energy independence. We offered a safe space for New Yorkers to charge their phones, call their families, and power up any necessary items. We were one of the first organizations to become experts in solar, and we were proud to innovate and show our community why solar was also a necessity worth investing in.
For years, we have recognized that solar cannot be truly resilient without energy storage. Through work by Angelica Ramdhari , Director of S1 Resilient Solar, we have been building solar + storage hubs (announcement to come!). And in the past few months, we have started to also focus on storage education.
In the lead-up to Earth Month, our Green Design Lab team, focused on K-12 STEM education and teacher professional development, partnered with Coro New York Leadership Center to discuss BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) and how they work in NYC. In the coming days, we will be sharing more about our solar+storage work so stay tuned!
