Clean Ocean Action

Clean Ocean Action Clean Ocean Action is a leading national and regional voice working to protect waterways using science, law, research, education and citizen action.

"Our goal is to improve the degraded water quality of the marine waters off the New Jersey/New York coast." Clean Ocean Action (COA) will identify the sources of pollution and mount an attack on each source by using research, public education, and citizen action to convince our public officials to enact and enforce measures which will clean up and protect our ocean. Clean Ocean Action (COA) is a b

road-based coalition of 125 active boating, business, community, conservation, diving, environmental, fishing, religious, service, student, surfing and women's groups. These "Ocean Wave-makers" work to clean up and protect the waters of the New York Bight. The groups came together in 1984 to investigate sources, effects, and solutions of ocean pollution. What follows is a description of the network. Under the guidance of COA's Board of Trustees, COA's staff researches pollution issues affecting the marine environment, then formulates policy and campaigns to eliminate each pollution source. The staff then coordinates and organizes the Ocean Wave-makers (Participating Organizations, Concerned Businesses, Educators for a Clean Ocean and Concerned Citizens) to use their individual experience and expertise to help. Press events, rallies, writing letters, making phone calls, testifying at public hearings and distributing literature are just some of the ways members of the coalition become involved. Clean Ocean Action is a 501(c)3 tax exempt nonprofit organization.

A great night for a cause! ๐ŸŒŠ

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Clean Ocean Action Awareness Night at Mar Belo on August 27. It was an inspiring evening that brought local ocean-lovers together, raised awareness for our work, and helped support our mission to protect and improve the health of our ocean, beaches, and waterways!

An ocean of gratitude to Mar Belo and Ambhar Tequila for making the evening possible, and ripples of thanks for those who came out to support COA ๐Ÿ’™

Thereโ€™s still some time to support COAโ€™s Savor the Shore campaign. Join the movement before Labor Day and show your customers, employees, and community that your business supports a clean ocean!

Help us celebrate a local Girl Scout making a difference! ๐ŸŒฟ

Jasmine, a rising senior at Mendham High School and former Clean Ocean Action Junior Beach Captain, was inspired by her beach cleanup experiences to create Pledge to Protect as her Girl Scout Gold Award Project. While Sweeping Asbury Park beaches, she saw how small actions can have a big impact on our environment!

Her Gold Award project educates visitors about protecting our public lands through environmental responsibility and stewardship. As the National Park Service celebrates its 110th anniversary, Jasmine's project is a reminder that protecting our parks, beaches, and natural spaces starts with each of us. ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿž๏ธ Please support Jasmine by visiting the links in our bio to learn more about Pledge to Protect and take the pledge!

Small actions can create waves of change for a cleaner environment! ๐ŸŒŠ

On August 1, 2026, New Jerseyโ€™s โ€œSkip the Stuffโ€ law took effect statewide, building on efforts already underway in communities across the state. More than 60 New Jersey municipalities had adopted local โ€œSkip the Stuffโ€ ordinances before the statewide law.

Does "Skip the Stuff" work?

To find out, Clean Ocean Action's Marine Debris Intern, Adriana Whelan, examined the results of Long Branch's local "Skip the Stuff" ordinance, which took effect last May. After one year, Adriana surveyed 20 Long Branch restaurants to measure changes in single-use utensil distribution and spending.

One year of results in Long Branch. Swipe to learn what the results mean for NJ's statewide "Skip the Stuff" law.

๐Ÿพ Yesterday was National Dog Day! Help keep our pups and waterways healthy by always scooping the p**p. Pet waste can โ€œpoo-lluteโ€ waterways through stormwater runoff, while plastic bags can linger in the environment for generations. Choose eco-friendly bags or reuse old ones when possible!
