Clean Ocean Action Clean Ocean Action is a leading national and regional voice working to protect waterways using science, law, research, education and citizen action.

"Our goal is to improve the degraded water quality of the marine waters off the New Jersey/New York coast." Clean Ocean Action (COA) will identify the sources of pollution and mount an attack on each source by using research, public education, and citizen action to convince our public officials to enact and enforce measures which will clean up and protect our ocean. road-based coalition of 125 active boating, business, community, conservation, diving, environmental, fishing, religious, service, student, surfing and women's groups. These "Ocean Wave-makers" work to clean up and protect the waters of the New York Bight. The groups came together in 1984 to investigate sources, effects, and solutions of ocean pollution. What follows is a description of the network. Under the guidance of COA's Board of Trustees, COA's staff researches pollution issues affecting the marine environment, then formulates policy and campaigns to eliminate each pollution source. The staff then coordinates and organizes the Ocean Wave-makers (Participating Organizations, Concerned Businesses, Educators for a Clean Ocean and Concerned Citizens) to use their individual experience and expertise to help. Press events, rallies, writing letters, making phone calls, testifying at public hearings and distributing literature are just some of the ways members of the coalition become involved. Clean Ocean Action is a 501(c)3 tax exempt nonprofit organization.

Clean Ocean Action applauds the U.S. Senateā€™s bipartisan, unanimous action to block the Trump administrationā€™s attempted dismantling of the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI).

The OOI is a nationwide ocean observation system that provides data supporting public safety, marine science, climate education, national security, and coastal economies.

Further testing on Tuesday, June 16th, has found that 10 bathing beaches with advisories have reopened except for Beesley's Point Beach, which is now closed.
The ECM announced 5 advisories this week: Wildwood and Bay, Baywyn and Bay, Ferry and Bay, Cedar Point and Beachwood Beach West. Have fun and stay safe!

On June 2, Clean Ocean Action submitted public comments opposing proposed changes to the North Atlantic Right Whale Vessel Speed Rule. āš ļø

With fewer than 400 North Atlantic Right Whales remaining, current protections require vessel speed reductions in designated areas and encourage slower speeds when whales are detected nearby.

The National Marine Fisheries Service is considering changes that would reduce reliance on seasonal speed restrictions and increase the use of technology-based whale detection measures.

These technologies have not been proven effective in preventing vessel strikes.

āš ļø Heads up! 11 New Jersey bathing beaches exceed state bacteria standards.

One of those beaches, Highlands Recreation Center Beach, was incorrectly listed as "safe" despite recording 575 cfu/100mL of enterococcus bacteria, more than five times the state's safe threshold of 104 cfu/100mL!

On June 10, the Atlantic City Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) buoy operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution detected the presence of north Atlantic right whales southeast of Atlantic City, NJ. NOAA Fisheries has implemented a right whale Slow Zone, which will be in effect through June 25, 2026.

To help protect this endangered species, New Jersey Marine Resources asks all mariners to:
ā€¢ Slow to 10 knots or less within the Dynamic Management Area (DMA)
ā€¢ Avoid the area when possible
ā€¢ Keep a vigilant lookout for whale activity

We had an incredible morning celebrating our rivers, our communities, and the power of environmental stewardship across the Two Rivers region.

This week, 177 public beaches along the Jersey Shore are open, while 37 remain closed or not yet open for the season. ā˜€ļøšŸ–ļø

Two locations tested by the state indicated bacteria levels above the limit considered safe for human contact. Wildwood Ocean Beach (2nd & JFK) had elevated bacteria levels on Monday, June 8th, prompting an advisory. A retest on Tuesday showed levels back to normal, and the advisory was lifted. Beachwood Beach West once again exceeded safe Enterococcus levels on Tuesday, June 9th. This marks the third week in a row this site has been under an advisory.

Meanwhile, coastal surveillance flights on June 8th, 9th, 11th, and 12th reported good overall beach and water conditions.

BREAKING NEWS: Fox News is reporting that President Trumpā€™s US Department of Interior, which includes the National Park Service, is severing partnerships with 43 organizations, including Clean Ocean Action. Our primary programs are Beach Sweeps, Student Summits, and other public education programs.

Fox News states, ā€œLed by Secretary Doug Burgum, the department determined the agreements were ā€˜operating in direct oppositionā€™ to its mission, according to a press release obtained exclusively by Fox News Digital.ā€

Clean Ocean Action has not received any communication regarding this action and are investigating. Stay tuned.
