Clean Ocean Action

Clean Ocean Action Clean Ocean Action is a leading national and regional voice working to protect waterways using science, law, research, education and citizen action.

"Our goal is to improve the degraded water quality of the marine waters off the New Jersey/New York coast." Clean Ocean Action (COA) will identify the sources of pollution and mount an attack on each source by using research, public education, and citizen action to convince our public officials to enact and enforce measures which will clean up and protect our ocean. Clean Ocean Action (COA) is a b

road-based coalition of 125 active boating, business, community, conservation, diving, environmental, fishing, religious, service, student, surfing and women's groups. These "Ocean Wave-makers" work to clean up and protect the waters of the New York Bight. The groups came together in 1984 to investigate sources, effects, and solutions of ocean pollution. What follows is a description of the network. Under the guidance of COA's Board of Trustees, COA's staff researches pollution issues affecting the marine environment, then formulates policy and campaigns to eliminate each pollution source. The staff then coordinates and organizes the Ocean Wave-makers (Participating Organizations, Concerned Businesses, Educators for a Clean Ocean and Concerned Citizens) to use their individual experience and expertise to help. Press events, rallies, writing letters, making phone calls, testifying at public hearings and distributing literature are just some of the ways members of the coalition become involved. Clean Ocean Action is a 501(c)3 tax exempt nonprofit organization.

🌊 Over two days, 20 middle schools joined Clean Ocean Action at the Sandy Hook Student Summit this Wednesday and Thursday for an unforgettable trip to the shore for hands-on learning and exploration!

Middle schoolers dove into roundtables led entirely by the powerhouse juniors and seniors of the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST), who stepped into their teacher hats for the day. These future scientists and leaders guided discussions on marine life, pollution prevention, conservation, and advocacy, inspiring younger students to spark a lifelong love for nature.

MAST students also supported field trips across the park alongside expert naturalists and partners from the American Littoral Society, Jenkinson’s Aquarium, Shark Research Institute, Save Our Whales, and Green Acres, helping bring each lesson to life.

Huge waves of gratitude to our COA Ambassadors, longtime volunteers, and, of course, our new fabulous summer interns and mentees who helped make the day possible.

A special thank‑you to Gateway National Recreation Area – Sandy Hook, for supporting the Student Summit for decades and providing an outdoor classroom filled with lessons students will carry for a lifetime.

And to our supportive sponsors, Eloise & John Pound in memory of Anne Inman Webster, and the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) for making this program possible.

🔗 COA’s Student Summits are FREE for schools (participants only cover transportation and lunch). Learn more on our website.

Headed to the beach this week? 🌊

⚠️ Four beaches have been flagged for water quality advisories. For non-swimming beaches, the ECM has found high levels of bacteria at Cedar Point, Cedar Bridge Manor, Beachwood Beach West, and East Avon Road. Snug Harbor, which was re-tested after seeing high numbers, is now safe for bathing.

We’ll provide a weekly summary tomorrow — stay tuned!

Former NJ Governor Phil Murphy is hosting a high-dollar fundraiser tonight for NY Governor Hochul, so she can do good things for New Yorkers. New York rakes it in while New Jersey suffers!

These Governors both recently schemed to simultaneously approve the dirty fossil fuel NESE pipeline that will destroy and contaminate vast areas of Raritan Bay and the ocean, as well as pollute NJ’s air and land. This is the same pipeline they opposed and successfully stopped until President Trump told them to make it happen.

New York takes, takes, takes while New Jersey suffers!
This is the kind of politics that pollutes democracy.
We can only hope Governor Mikie Sherrill is as bold as she claims and STANDS UP TO PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP and FOR NEW JERSEY...

, say NO TO NESE!!!

Clean Ocean Action shares our deepest respect to the heroes who fight for our country, as well as their families.

The Memorial Day weekend has also come to symbolize the unofficial start of the summer season, especially along the shore. As we look forward to the days of warm sea breezes and the splash of cool waves with family and friends, please take time to remember those who stood up for and perished defending USA’s freedoms and democratic values, and seek to uphold civic responsibilities and rights for all.

We’re dedicated to keeping our shores healthy and thriving for generations to come. To learn more about the issues the ocean is facing, visit our website at the link in our bio. 🔗

Memorial Day Weekend kicks off beach season 2026, and don't spend it swimming in contaminated water! "Poo-llution" can lead to stomach illness, diarrhea, skin rashes, ear infections, and other symptoms you don’t want after a beach day!

Before you go head to the shore, it’s important to know what’s in the water.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), with NJ Department of Health and local partners, has launched its annual Beach Monitoring Program. Water is tested weekly at 268 total sites:

🏖️ CCMP (Cooperative Coastal Monitoring Program): 223 official swimming beaches with lifeguards
🌊 ECM (Environmental Coastal Monitoring): 45 additional areas of concern (not designated swimming beaches)

Each week, water samples are tested for f***l indicator bacteria especially Enterococcus to determine if water is safe for recreation. The DEP will send out advisories when bacteria levels exceed safety standards, and beaches may close under CCMP until two safe tests in a row. ECM sites receive advisories when bacteria levels are high. COA will report the weekly water quality reports from the NJDEP. Follow for Jersey Shore water quality updates all summer long!

Give your team a day of purpose and fun at Sandy Hook with Clean Ocean Action’s Corporate Beach Sweeps! 🌊 ✨

This half‑day team‑building program blends community science with meaningful impact as employees learn about ocean health, marine debris, and environmental stewardship. After a brief orientation led by COA staff, your team heads to the beach for a Beach Sweep, collecting and recording debris, collaborating in small groups, and enjoying friendly competition along the way.

Each participating business receives a personalized impact report with data and photos, plus recognition in COA’s annual Corporate Beach Sweeps Report. Programs run on select weekdays from June through mid‑September and include lunch and all supplies.

In 2025, volunteers from 21 companies removed 29,849 pieces of litter from New Jersey’s beaches. Every item collected helps make our shoreline safer for marine life and more enjoyable for visitors.

Strengthen your team, support a cleaner ocean, and inspire everyday environmental stewards. 🌎 💙
