In honor of National Historical Marker Day, the Long Beach Historical Society invites you to take a virtual tour visiting the sites of some of Long Beach's historical markers!

National Historical Marker Day is a service-oriented holiday held annually on the last Friday of April to celebrate and preserve local history. Established by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, the day encourages community members to get outside and provide hands-on care for the markers in their neighborhoods. Volunteers typically spend the day cleaning and maintaining these signs to ensure they stay in good condition, while also using social media to share the stories and landmarks that define their town's unique heritage.

Post pictures of you visiting our local markers in the comments!

The Long Beach Historical Society invites you to join us for a special screening of "Roots to Rockets" at our quarterly meeting!

The Details
🗓️ When: Monday, April 20, 2026
⏰ Time: 6:00 PM
📍 Where: The Beth Hansen History House

"Roots to Rockets" is a tribute to the families of Pearlington, Gainesville, Napoleon, Santa Rosa, Logtown, and Westonia. In the early 1960s, these residents were relocated to clear 125,000 acres for the NASA Mississippi Test Facility (now Stennis Space Center).

Producers Matt Barrett and Brehm Bell spent over a year capturing first-hand accounts of this monumental transition, ensuring these voices remain a permanent part of our local narrative.

After the screening, Producers Matt Barrett and Brehm Bell will be available to answer questions and speak about the documentary.

The Long Beach Historical Society is thrilled to see Long Beach Main Street Association bringing back a true local tradition: the Radish Festival!

🗓️Saturday April 18, 2026
📍201 Jeff Davis Avenue
⏰ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

Did you know that in the early 1900s, Long Beach was known as the Radish Capital of the World?

Our sandy soil was perfect for growing the famous "Long Beach Red" radish, which was once a staple in fine dining rooms across the country.

Be sure to stop by our table and learn more about how you can get involved with the Long Beach Historical Society!!

We can’t wait to celebrate our roots with you. See you at the festival!

Throwback Thursday in Downtown Long Beach!

A couple of weeks ago, we shared a look back at Jeff Davis Avenue, but this week, we’re going even further back in time! 👀

This photo captures an even earlier view of downtown Long Beach, reminding us just how much our community has grown and evolved over the years.

While buildings, businesses, and streets may change, one thing has always stayed the same.. the strong sense of community that makes Long Beach feel like home. ❤️
