Meet Dr. Katya Adachi Serrano! 🌿
We’re honored to have Dr. Serrano on our American Changing Spirits team, bringing her expertise in natural medicine and compassionate, culturally-connected care to our MOUD services.

Dr. Serrano is a board-certified physician specializing in holistic healing through plant medicine, bodywork, and integrative approaches. As a native Spanish-speaking doctor, she creates a bridge of understanding and trust for our clients who find comfort connecting with someone who shares their language and culture.

Her approach brings the four realms of health—body, mind, heart, and spirit—into balance, supporting recovery and wellness from the roots up. From managing chronic conditions to supporting recovery from substance use, Dr. Serrano walks alongside each patient on their unique healing journey.

Our clients are benefiting from having access to MOUD services with the security and comfort of a provider who truly understands their needs, communicates in their native language, and honors their whole person—not just their symptoms.

Lindsey went from being a runner to becoming a recovery coach, showing resilience and purpose along the way. With Strides in Recovery, she helps others heal by focusing on small, achievable goals. We’re proud to support programs that respect the culture and community of our clients at American Indian Changing Spirits, where movement is part of the healing process. In a world obsessed with power and success, this message reminds us what the planet truly needs: peacemakers, healers, and lovers of all kinds. Not more people racing to the top, but those willing to serve, restore, and bring life back into balance.

The image of an indigenous elder standing in unity with a bear symbolizes deep respect for nature and all living beings. It calls for a new kind of leadership—rooted in compassion, empathy, and stewardship rather than domination. True strength lies not in success, but in restoring harmony with the Earth and each other.

Last week Changing Spirits, along with our fellow SAPC provider partners Fred Brown Recovery Services, Behavioral Health Services, Inc., and many others across the state educated and advocated with our senators and representatives to support needed policy this week at CAADPE’s Policy Symposium & Advocacy Days in Sacramento.

Our team met with Senator Lena Gonzales’s team to discuss policies that mandate overdose prevention training as a module for CPR certification providers, expand access to Narcan in schools mandating that school resource officers carry Narcan and are trained in its use, require that the criminal justice system provide timely clinical assessments performed by qualified SUD staff for justice-involved persons eligible for diversion, and ensure processes that streamline DHCS audits to ease administrative burden on providers.

AICS also stopped by Senator James Ramos’s office, the first elected California Native American state lawmaker, to invite his team to our 25th Anniversay Gala, and we hope that they will consider our invitation!

When the world feels unsettled, our ancestors taught us not to panic but to pay attention, to slow down and ground ourselves, and to return to care, responsibility, and prayer for one another. Indigenous teachings remind us that unrest is not new to our people. We have lived through disruption, loss, and uncertainty before, and we survived by staying connected to land, spirit, and community, holding each other close and moving with intention rather than fear.

Prayers lifted up for Minnesota and for all of our collective communities carrying heaviness and uncertainty right now. Stay grounded, remain in prayer, look out for one another, and may the Creator lead us toward the drastic change needed for all humanity.
