Lapidary workshop on Fridays 10:30am to 3:45pm and Saturdays 10am to 2pm. Daily fees for workshop $10 nonmembers and $5 for members The Long Beach Mineral & Gem Society has been a nonprofit 501(c) educational society operating continuously since 1937. We encourage the study of geology, paleontology, minerals, gems and the hobbyist who collects specimens for fun. Our group of enthusiastic volunteer

members combine their skills and experiences to share our passions with new members in our Long Beach community. We host monthly meetings on the second Monday of every month from 7pm to 9pm. Our programs are often hosted by guest speakers, and we offer free presentations about rocks, minerals, geology, fossils and lapidary. Throughout the year LBMGS organizes day fieldtrips that range from rock hounding to geological and paleontological interests. We also host an onsite lapidary workshop that is available to members and guests for a nominal fee where they can learn how to cut and polish rocks, make a cabochon and more!

Interesting facts about Larimar

Interesting facts about Larimar

Larimar is a rare gemstone known for its soft ocean-blue hues with white cloudlike patterns, evoking the calm of tropical seas. It is found exclusively in the Dominican Republic, within the Barahona region, where volcanic activity created cavities later filled by rare blue pectolite mineralization under low-temperature hydrothermal conditions.

First discovered in 1974 by Miguel Méndez and Peace Corps volunteer Norman Rilling, the stone was named by blending Méndez’s daughter Larissa with “mar,” the Spanish word for sea. Since then, Larimar has become a symbol of Caribbean identity and one of the world’s most sought-after rare gemstones.

Unfortunately, our June meeting program has to be postponed. We will still meet on Monday, June 8th.

Ian Garside has just been released from hospital today, and is recovering at home. He says that he will reschedule his talk and demo once he feels better.

Meanwhile, we will come up with an alternative activity. Any ideas out there?

Our neighbor's, The Delvers Gem & Mineral Society, are having a nice local show. Stop by and check it out.
