Americans for a Living Wage

Americans for a Living Wage This page is out to promote a living wage for all who work. Nobody who works should have to live in and below poverty. When F.D.R.

signed the Fair Labor Standards Act that instituted the federal minimum wage in 1938, he made it abundantly clear that the minimum wage was supposed to be a living wage. Today it is difficult for a single individual with no children to survive on $7.25 per hour. Our goal is have the federal minimum wage linked to the cost of living. We will work with as many localities as possible to elect intelli

gent lawmakers, promote ballot initiatives and highlight corporate executives and CEO's that are making a difference in the advancement of a living wage. Companies like Whole Foods, Costco, Trader Joe's, Ben & Jerry's and QuickTrip have decided to pay considerably more than the minimum wage. These companies start employees with entry-level wages of at least $11 per hour. QuickTrip pays a whopping starting wage of $40,000 annually to it's entry-level employees! Most minimum wage employees are not kids in high school as some would have you believe. Minimum wage employees often include adults, families and single parents. $7.25 per hour places these families into government assistance forcing the rest of us to make-up the difference even if do not wish to patron these businesses. Let's work together to raise the minimum wage to a living wage!
